Holy Scabbed Nipples

I know that the first few weeks of BFing are supposed to be painful, but my nipples are killing me.  They both have scabs now and the first few minutes after he latches on are miserable.

The LC says that he is latched correctly, but that he just has a small mouth and an impressive suck.

Anyone out there have the same thing happen?  How long before they started to heal and your nips didn't feel so awful?  I have been putting lanolin on them, but is there anything else that helps?

I just keep telling myself that once I make it to the 2 week mark everything will be better.  I'd actually enjoy BFing if I didn't want to cry everytime he latches on.

  • Hang in there! ?It does get better. ?I was really sore for a while even though he was latched well. ?DS just has a really strong suck. ?It got way better around 3 weeks for me. ?Mother Love nipple cream was great for me. ?I'm still honestly a little sore all the time just b/c his latch is so strong but it's really minor compared to at the beginning. ?It's worth it too so hang in there.

  • It was quite painful for me for the first 3 or 4 weeks. Then slowly it got better, now its like nothing and Im glad I stuck it out because its totally worth it once the pain goes away. I dont know that it will be completely better in the 2nd week but it will start to get a little better thats for sure.

    Thanks!

And thanks for the encouragement.  He put on 8 oz in 2 days so I know that it's working!  I'm on a mission to stick it out.  Its just good to know that there will be an end to the pain...

  • I had the same issue & came extremely close to giving up!  I was afraid LO's first word was going to be m-f- because the of the language that came out of my mouth everytime she latched on!  But, here's what I did (I only had one really scabbed nipple so it may be a bit different).  First, I nursed on the left & pumped on the right(this was the painful side) for about 5 days.  Second, my OB prescribed me "all purpose nipple cream."  I used that for about a week or so.  After about 5 days, I saw some progress & it seemed to be getting better.  Although I honestly didn't think I would ever let LO back near that nipple again, I got brave.  I bought a nipple shield and used that for another 3-4 days.  By that time, it had really healed almost completely.  LO will be 8 weeks tomorrow & it has been going great ever since!
  • Hang in there!  I have issues with scabbing and cracks and the only thing that work to heal them was to mix a little neosporin and hydrocortosone on your finger and apply that to the nipple.  It doesn't sting or hurt (which I was afraid of) and it did help heal them. GL!
  • I had that exact situation and promise it gets better. I EBF and have no pain now.

I used nipple shields for a few days so I could heal. I would ask your LC about this. They are great but you have to be careful to use them properly so that they don't do more harm than good.

    GL!
