composting

So, the house we just moved into has a compost pile started - how hard is it for me to keep it up?  I am so overwhelmed right now with everything that needs to be done that this seems like just one more time sucker - tell me i'm wrong?

Re: composting

  • I dont think it's much work, but I just started and I have a bin.  I think that you can just leave it be for a while, while you get settled in your house and then maybe pick it up next spring?

My problem is that we don't have a garbage disposal and hate to throw stuff away.  I mean, everything is set up, can I just dump what I have in there? The leaves won't be too far behind, that should do it right?

  • Well for it to properly decompose, your supposed to have 2x the amount of browns as you do greens.  Browns can be leaves, twigs (which of course take longer), paper towels, shredded newpaper and cardboard.  If you google composting, you'll probably find some good info.  I also think if it's just a hole in the ground you need to bury the food each time you dump it about 8 inches down.  You also have to mix it up every once in a while.  Maintenance on the different types (hole in ground vs.container) is different, so you need to look up what you're supposed to do for your specific kind.  GL!

  • It can be as time consumptive as you want it to be...we started a really high maintenance system and then one of my super green friends came over and told me it does not have to be that way. Now we just toss in our kitchen scraps (no meat or dairy) and then toss on grass clippings, weeds, etc and when I am out there I will poke at it a bit with a shovel, but that is about it. When I want to start something new in the garden I shovel the bottom of the pile on and mix it into the top soil about a foot deep. This gives new starts a good base of nutrients. I know my parents do even less with the pile in the garden and simply rototill it into the entire garden after the last frost (early spring) in preparation for planting. GL
