Overwhelmed by all the stuff to purchase

Anybody else just get completely overwhelmed by all the baby "stuff"?  I'm reading through baby bargains and have a few good lists of the 'must haves' but if I start looking at it for too long I get a headache and give up.  Anybody else feel the same way?

Re: Overwhelmed by all the stuff to purchase

  • I for sure feel this way.  I got some people saying you need this, this, and this and others saying you dont need these items right away ....it's like which is it?!?!!?   Very overwhelming .......DH and I are going to register in a couple of weeks.  I figure we'll see what we get at the two showers and then if we still "need" something we'll go from there!!!

  • I was feeling really overwhelmed and then all of a sudden people started giving me stuff. For example my step dad made me a changing table and my Mom got us a car seat. Not to mention all the hand me downs from family and friends. Just try to take it one item at a time and remember you still have plenty of time.
  • It definitely can be.

I took my SIL to BRU with me when I registered and she told me everything I would need.  Afterwards, I compared my registry to the BRU guidelist provided and it matched up pretty well.  You might refer to there list...I don't think it was too overwhelming.  Plus it also had suggestions of quantity on some items.

  • There isn't much you absolutely need right away.  Baby will be mostly eating, sleeping, and pooping so as long as you have stuff to deal with that and some clothes and blankets to keep LO warm you will be fine for a while.

  • Just remember, all you really need are diapers, a way to feed the baby (either your b**b or a bottle), clothes, and a place for the baby to sleep. Anything else is simply there to add convenience to our lives. Try to stick with the basics and then if you have time and the money buy the extras.

  • There is a lot of stuff! With DD1, we purchased a few things that we never touched. This time, we have a list of 5 things that we will need for this baby- either b/c DD1 still uses it or b/c we need it for 2 babies. As for when you register, we did a bunch but then left and added the rest/edited later. It's a lot to wrap your head around! (FWIW- I couldn't have survived without the FP aquarium crib soother)
  • It can be very overwhelming. From my experience I will tell you that you do really only need the basics at first. I fretted over a bassinet or a pack n play for weeks and guess what? My DS was colicky and we had to hold him for 12 weeks. So he never ever used the pack n play. But the swing was a godsend. You just don't know what your baby will like or not like.

As far as stuff ( besides diapers/bottles/pacifers etc) I could have never made it without my 2 Boppy Pillows. I could have survived 3 months with those, a swing, a car seat and a stroller.

But I agree to just go off the BRU list and save your receipts!!!!

  • Like an OP said everyone giving advise and recommendations that are conflicting is making it very hard. My SILs all pretty much agreed on basic items while my Aunt keeps laughing at those and swears by others. Not to mention the fact that people don't always look at the registery and then you end up with multiple of the same item or stuff you don't even want. I've gonna to BRU and looked on line but am so not looking foward to going next friday to register.

I was starting to feel overwhelmed and then one of my best friends, who is done having babies, offered to give us all of their baby stuff. And I do mean all of it. Swing, bouncy chair, pack-n-play, baby bath, receiving blankets, burp clothes, bottles, clothes, boppy, breast pump - EVERYTHING. When we went to register, I hardly had anything to put on it because they are giving us so much.

  • I started to let myself get overwhelmed, but then I broke it down into a few small sections, which made it a whole heck of a lot easier to handle. I am planning on tackling the big stuff first: Crib, Changing Table, Stroller/Car Seats.

Then I will work on the smaller stuff. I make it a point to pick up baby wipes and diapers every time i go to the store.

  • Carseat, food, clothes, diapers, shelter, love and a cozy place to sleep...this is what you NEED.  Everything else is just "extra"/can be purchased after the fact if you find that you or your little one has a need for it.  Not all babies respond to "stuff" the same as others(like a swing, swaddling or even certain bottle nipples for that matter).  I hope this helps to ease that overwhelming feeling.

  • I'm a second time mom. I found that book really helpful, but it's amazing how little you need. Or how quickly they outgrow stuff.  Remember too that you can always run to the store and buy something after the baby is born.
