How do you know how big you are measuring?

When we first found out it was twins they told me I was measuring 16 weeks, I was 13 weeks at the time.  Sine that time I have seen my new OB once and my peri twice and I haven't gotten an update.  I'm not sure if they have chceked this or not and maybe they did and just didn't tell me.  Do you ladies find out at your appointments or is there another way to tell?  TIA

Re: How do you know how big you are measuring?

  • When they do the growth scans at the specialist the u/s machine actually enters an estimated date based on the measurements and I can usually see that.  Or sometimes I'll ask how I'm measuring compared to other pregnancies.  I don't think they always make a point of telling me, just that they are measuring ahead of schedule.

About me  2007: Started TTC. 2008: OB prescribed clomid, went to RE and was Dx with PCOS. 2009: IUI #1 w/follitsim and trigger = BFP. B/G Twins born at 33 weeks. 2012: TTC #3, Round 2 of Letrozole w/TI = BFP, missed m/c at 8 1/2 wks. Currently on the bench as we make plans for a new home. Anxious to start TTC #3 within the next year!

  • My OB measures my fundus (??)  everytime and tells me that generally it's 1 cm for every week.   i.e. 39 cm = 39 weeks

Correct me if I'm completely off.

  • 2 ways like mentioned-

the fetuses can be measured on u/s and the machine calculates how many weeks on avg they are individually measuring based on head circumference, femur length, abdominal circumference, etc (earlier on in pregnancy by crown to rump length)

OR, the OB usually measures from your symphysis pubis (pubic bone joint) to the top of your uterus (fundus) w/ a measuring tape at visits after around 16 weeks. In a singleton pregnancy, this measurement in cm is usually around the same as weeks (22 cm at 22 wks) but obviously varies from woman to woman and is used more to make sure that growth is happening and to see if it is really small or really big & may warrant additional tests. With twins (not sure of the info re HOM), most women will measure on avg 8-10 weeks ahead- ish. For example I was 34 1/2 weeks at my last appt but my fundal height was 44 cm.

    HOpe that was semi clear.

  • I figured they must measure when I'm there.  They told me how the babies were measuring but I didn't ask about myself.  I think I'll start asking.

Definitely good to ask but I know some dr's dont  really do it b/c it is such a loose guide esp w/ multiples & if they have regular growth scans to check on growth they may not feel the 'old fashioned' way is necessary, all depends on the dr.

  • My OB and Peri never "measured" me at all since it wouldn't be accurate.   They just measured the girls and gave me approx. sizes.

This is right, they measure fundal height.  There is no standard with twins the way there is with singletons, so most OBs won't bother measuring you (mine wouldn't) because it means nothing.  But once in awhile I would ask mine to measure me just for fun, to see how much bigger I was than a singleton pg.  I was usually measuring 4-6 weeks (or centimeters) ahead of a singleton pg).

Mine measures starting at 16w.  I think he does it just for "fun".  He said that there's really no rule of thumb and they still like to do the U/S because manual measuring won't show if one baby's not growing.

Ditto,  except the last measurement I had was 28 weeks and I was measuring 34 weeks so I have only been about 6 weeks ahead.
