Screaming bloody murder on the changing table?

This just began with her yesterday, but since then every single time I've had her on there, she's screamed bloody murder. I actually stop several times just to pick her up and calm her down because she's crying so violently.

I don't see a rash or anything. And it happens when I'm just changing her clothes too.

Any ideas?

  • I have this same issue.  He HATES to be changed but also hates a wet, dirty diaper.  Haha .. it doesnt exactly even out.

  • may be gas, may be she just wants to be held. DS does it at times and we just try to get done as soon as possible and then pick him up.

  • My DS does that all the time.. .

Just in the last week or so he tolerates diaper changes better....

I wish I had a solution or idea as well.

  • Have you tried giving her a pacifier??

  • Mine is screaming in the carseat everytime! Makes it hard to go anywhere.  I have lots of back to school shopping to get done for my 3rd grader
  • Hmmm, well I'm glad that I'm not alone.

I'm hoping it's just a random phase. She was fine with it until yesterday. Silly kid ;o)

  • Maybe she is cold?  My DD loves bath time but every time I put her on the changing table after her bath and put a diaper on her she screams.  I think it is because she is cold and naked.  I just make sure to put her diaper and pajamas on as fast as I can and then the screaming stops.

I started changing DS on the floor (on a blanket) and that is not AS bad...still screams from time to time though...Wish I had advice!!!
  • Maybe a toy?  Or have you tried changing elsewhere?  Ds screamed bloody murder for the first 5 weeks and then progressively starting liking (and now loving) diaper changes and spending time on the changing table.

This.  I've tried giving him a pacifier but he doesn't always take it.  We just change him as quickly as possible and then pick him up.  I brought it up at his 2 week appointment and the Pedi said it is just a phase (hopefully one that passes quickly!)

  • DD did this when she was younger. What I did was distract her with something, like try to make it fun. It worked no more screaming but we have another problem now.... she thinks its play time on the mat. She gets silly and wiggles a lot along with kicking, smiling, laughing etc.  and 'spitting' (putting her lips together and blowing spit you know) but it is a lot better than screaming.

Yup, and this worked until yesterday. Now she's screaming so hard, she can't even tell it's in her mouth (and if I put it in first, she starts screaming anyways and forgets it's in her mouth).

The cold thing might be the issue. They need to come out with a heated changing pad.

  • Dean did that the first month or so of his life...maybe even a little longer.  You'd have thought we were cutting his legs off.  The good news is that it passed and we can now change most diapers with no issues.  He still isn't the world's biggest fan of having his clothes put on, but it isn't as traumatic as it onces was.  He just whines and complains.

Good luck!  This too shall pass.

  • I always found it awkward to change LO on our changing table since it is on our big dresser with a hutch. My DH always changed him on it, though.  From the first week until currently, I change LO in his crib. I put a blanket down that is folded up in case he decides to wet without a diaper and hopefully it doesn't get on his sheets. He hasn't done this in a long time. I use his crib for changes, clothes changes, lotioning after bath, and he will hang out in his crib with his lights and sounds crib toy.  I also always put on the mobile (he always looks up for it, even if I try to throw on the lights and sounds thing, he wants the best of both worlds!Big Smile) Maybe try a change of scenery??  It works great for us and he doesn't ever cry for anything (unless we sometimes take him out of the crib and he's not done playing/watching!!)  Good luck and hopefully it's just a phase!
