Just starting out...how much to feed LO?

The pedi gave us the go ahead for rice cereal and fruits and advised that these items are to be "snacks" and they should not replace any meals (formula). He also said that we shouldn't worry about how much DS is eating of it. He says a couple of spoonfuls is just fine and at this time, it's more about the introduction of the spoon and process of actually eating as opposed to just sucking a bottle.

Well, I have been mixing a bit of banana into the rice cereal and he seems to like it. He'll eat 7 or 8 decent spoonfuls for me and we're both content. Yesterday, my mom said she gave him an entire jar (albiet it a small one) of bananas - half earilier half later. She said he "did great" and probably could have even had a bit more. No puking. No spitting up. No upset belly. Still finished usual amounts of bottles.

He is 4 months old. How much and what are you feeding your LO?

Re: Just starting out...how much to feed LO?

  • DD is 4 months and we are only doing rice cereal. We started with a tablespoon mixed with enough formula to make it 'soupy.' We're slowly working our way up to 4 tbsp. but haven't hit it yet. We were doing 3 tbsp. but in the AM she was throwing up a lot more so we thought maybe it was too much for her. Anyway, she gets this 2x a day - once in the AM and once in the PM. Both times she finishes her bottle afterwards.

  • When are you planning on introducing fruits/veggies?
  • I actually have the same question (LO is 4 months adjusted).  I think whatever they'll eat is OK.  right?

My question is more along the lines of what proportions to give.  Like if you give JUST fruit, is that bad?  Or should you give more oatmeal and a little fruit? or does it make one darn bit of difference.

I don't think it much matters exactly what is being fed to them as far as ratio of cereal to fruit - I personally do mostly cereal and then a baby spook or two of fruit and mix it together. Yesterday was the first time he ever had JUST fruit and my mom fed him the entire jar! I am just wondering how much to feed him - should I stop him if he wants more? What if he will eat more, but only because I keep feeding it to him? Not because he's truly still hungry. I know it is possible to overfeed, but where's the line?
