3rd Trimester

Anyone done having kids?

This is only my second pregnancy, but between my husband's kids and my own, this is our fourth child.  I would love to have more, but my experience with pregnancies has been horrendous, so we are seriously considering my having a hysterectomy.  Anybody else considering?  Thoughts?  (Positives, negatives)  Just trying to gather some information and advice.

Re: Anyone done having kids?

  • This will be my first and last. Haven't decided on a BC method yet.

  • This is our last one.  DH will have the surgery as soon as #2 is born healthy.

  • why are you considering a hysterectomy when there are plenty of other ways to prevent pregnancy?

I would assume because of medical reasons...

  • This will be our first and most likely our last (unless we both change our opinions). We've always said we'd have just 1.
  • This is our second and probably our last.  No clue what we are going to do for BC.  I'm not 100% ready to take the leap to have my tubes tied because it is permanant and we're still somewhat young.  I guess a year or so down the road if we are still sure we are done hubby may get the big V.
  • This is only our first, but somewhere down the road I can imagine my husband will have a vasectomy. A while back, there was a study that suggested men who have vasectomies are slightly more likely to develop prostate cancer, but since then, other studies have contradicted that conclusion. I'd be willing to get my tubes tied, but the vasectomy just seems less invasive.

  • I would say unless you're a C-section and they can just tie your tubes while they're already in there (like a PP said, I think a tubal ligation is less extreme than a hysterectomy), your husband should get his tubes tied.  From what I understand, it is less invasive and there are less possible complications with a man getting "fixed" than a woman.
  • This could very well be an only child.  If we decide that is the case, H will have a vasectomy (when I asked if he would consider a vasectomy he enthusiastically said yes - I was surprised).

ETA: "entusiastically" might be a bit strong - but it seemed like he didn't have any problems with the idea at all

  • I'm pretty sure we are done after this one, but I'm not ready to go permanent yet. I am planning to get the Mireana IUD. If after the 5 years it can stay in, we still don't want more, we may look into more permanent measures, or I will just get another Mirena.

  • as soon as LO is born healthy DH will be having 'the' surgery. Is there a reason for a hysterectomy?? Seems a little much.
  • This will be our last child.  I originally wanted 3, but with my age (35) and a down syndrome scare, I do not want to have another.  Pregnancy is too hard, and 2 just seems right for us.  After this baby comes, we will do some sort of permanent BC, but we haven't decided yet.  If I end up needing a C/S (which I hope I don't) I'll ask them to tie my tubes while I am all opened up.  However, I do not want to go under the knife to get my tubes tied if I don't have to.  I am trying to talk DH into getting a vasectomy, but he's not too keen on that.  I figure after all that I have been through, it's his turn to do something!! Wink  I do not react well to any hormonal BC, so an IUD or anything else like that really isn't an option.  My OB did tell me about something called Essure (or something like that) and that is where they put a spring like thing into your tube and it curls up on itself and blocks any eggs coming out.  He said it wasn't a bad procedure (they do it right in the office), so we might look into that if I can't talk DH into getting snipped.

A hysterectomy? Is that what your doctor recommends?

The current plan is that our baby girl will be our one and only but who knows.

A hysterectomy is MAJOR surgery, why would you not jsut have your tubes tied, or your H snipped?

  • This is only my first, but I may be done.  I don't know if I can bring myself to do this again.  Tongue Tied
  • I'm done!

DH plans to get a vasectomy after LO is born.

This is our first. We will definitely try for one more and that will probably be it. Ideally, I would love to have 3, but realistically 2 will have to do it.
  • This is my first and I?want?at least one more I'm only 21 and my dream has always been to have two, but DF says he's done after this one. I think he'll change his mind after Ellie's born and grown up a bit. His first child he has no contact with due to circumstances he can't change so he?scared?about being a father he's afraid he'll fail our daughter like his son.?
  • I don't know if this will be my last, I would like two but me and DH are getting a little old, I'm 34 he's 41. ?We might adopt an older child for our 2nd. ?We haven't discussed BC yet. ?It took us almost a year to get pregnant so we may just go back to condoms.

My doc does the Essure too.  I was thinking about it until I realized I couldn't do it because I am very allergic to nickel.  If you have nickel allergies you may want to look in to that and speak with your doctor.  It was a complete fluke how the conversation came up with my doc.  Had I not asked, I may have had it done and had a terrible reaction.

  • This is our first and probably our only, but we're holding off on any surgical BC until we're sure.

this right at this moment, but give me a few years and i may change...2 will be it though. I am an only child, so I know how awful it is to not have anyone to hang out with...

  • this is our 3 rd and last. we have 2 girls and this one is a boy.i was thinking about getting my tubes tied my changed my mind...not that we want more kids but i know how upset i would be knowing i couldn't ..not sure what BC i will use either..i tried the shot and that caused me to gain a lot of weight so i stopped that...had an iud..dr out it in wrong very painful lol so i guess i might be using the pill once this baby comes..if he ever does!!
  • I have 2 SIL's because MIL got her tubes tied...twice....Just saying. Big Smile She had everything taken out after the second. I know that's crazy rare, I keep telling her she should've sued. But it's still something to think about I suppose. Also I know a lot of people who got pregnant with IUDs and that scares me too. My plan is to just stop having sex, lol.
  • This will also be our last. But since I had to be pregnant and give birth I think DH can take one for the team and get a little snip. I have heard it is a lot less invasive for the guys.

  • Why a hysterectomy?

We think he will be our first and last, but that is subject to change.
