2nd Trimester

Foam or Coil

I am still trying to decide if we should get a foam or a coil mattress. I was all set on foram until we went to buy our crib and the sales guy said that if we are planning to use our crib as a toddler bed, which we will, then we should buy a coil mattress, because a foam one will not survive for more then 2-3 years.

I remember reading about it in Baby Bargains and they said that it's not 100% true, so now I am a bit confused.

Which one are you getting and why?

TIA!

Re: Foam or Coil

  • Baby Bargains does say that the foam not lasting is not true.

However, I did go with a coil mattress. It's a Sealy Baby mattress and it had good reviews and was around 85 dollars.

To me, in the grand scheme of things, a fancier mattress was not a priority-- as long as the cheaper one is safe, which I believe it is.

  • Baby bargains said that's a lie.  We bought a coil only because Baby Bargains said to buy the one that felt the firmest when you press it in the middle.  At the store we went to, the coil was firmer than the foam.

We are buying this foam mattress from Target. It costs $299, which is more than twice what I planned on spending on a mattress but DH really wants this specific one. It only has 1 review, but it's a good one but what we really like about this mattress is that it has 2 different sides to the mattress. One side is for the crib and the other is for a toddler bed, which we will use when we convert the crib. We plan to use this mattress until the baby outgrows the toddler bed, so it better last that long for the price!

  • We went with foam - it's SO lightweight!  The midnight sheet changing is what I thought of most, and the foam and coil have comparable safety ratings.  THe "foam doesn't last long" is not true according to Baby Bargains.  But, even so, we will not have a "toddler bed"...we'll go straight to a twin size, so it wasn't a concern for us.  I think it's just a matter of preference really...whatever you like best!

  • We did foam. We got the colgate Classico that Baby Bargains recommends. It was $149. I got foam because it said coil was much heavier and if I am changing sheets in the middle of the night, I want it to be fast.

  • I guess I need to pull out Baby Bargains again. I would've sworn they recommended foam which is what I've been looking at. I will go with whatever is firm at a good price.

  • We're going with a coil, because we feel like it will be a little more firm, will hold up a little better, and is less expensive.  We're planning to buy one mentioned earlier that Baby Bargain recommended - the Sealy whatever for $85.

I believe either is fine.  We were set on foam until I saw that BRU is offering a free Simmons coil mattress worth $120 with a purchase of a crib.  Can't pass that up!

  • Love the foam!  Wrestling the mattress out of the bed (keep in mind it's a TIGHT FIT for safety) and back in, especially pregnant with #2, I'm glad that it's nice and light!
