Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question for those who've had an external version

I'm scheduled next weds to try and have been reading up on the procedure like crazy but I?d love some 1st hand advice from those that had the procedure done.

Did it work for you?

Did baby stay turned?

Did you have complications?

Did it hurt?

Anything you can do to prepare?

Did you try positions to get your baby to turn in his/her own?

Thank you so much for your advice!

Re: Question for those who've had an external version

  • I did not attempt the version for several reasons.  The two biggest reasons being that DS turned breech 5 days before my edd.  He was estimated to be 7.5 to 8lbs (turns out he was only 5lbs 12oz) and the doc didn't think the version would be successful.  The second reason is that I only know two people who have had versions.  Both would up with emergency c/s during the versions because their babies went into distress.  For one friend, the cord was wrapped around her baby's neck and the version was literally stangling her DD.  They were never able to determine the reason for the distress in my other friend's baby.  IMO the risks don't out-weigh the benefits.

  • I opted to schedule a c-section instead of attempting a version. These were my reasons:

    1. My Dr's success rate is 50%.

    2. They would have induced me on the same day they did the version if it was successful. Induced labors can be long, painful, and end in c-section anyway.

    3. Versions can cause fetal distress.

    4. Versions can be painful for the mom.

    5. I figured there had to be a good reason why DS had not flipped. The entire pregnancy, he hung out in the right half of my uterus...towards the top. ALWAYS. I thought there must be a reason.

Turns out my motherly instinct was correct...he had the cord around his neck 3, yes 3, times! He was completely "pinned" in place. My Dr. was relieved we didn't try the version, she said it would have surely ended in an emergency c-section anyway. Even as it was, my DS had an apgar of 4 at one minute because of the distress the cord caused him when I went into natural labor before my scheduled c-section.

  • So was not worth the risks for me.  I scheduled a c-section and I'm 100% glad that I went that route.  I felt like if she wanted to flip, she would and if not, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
