Need Advice - No clue what to do re: sleeping

My daughter is 4.5 months old and July has been a nightmare.  We put her down at 8:30. She used to sleep until 2:30 for her first feeding, then up for the day at 6:30.  This month, she seems to wake up every 2-3 hours crying. She doesn't fall back asleep on her own. If we get to the crib quickly, she'll take a pacifier and fall back asleep. Otherwise, we need to rock her back to sleep.  Usually, nursing is the only thing that gets her back asleep.

How do we get her to learn to fall back asleep on her own? I've been against crying it out, but I'm wondering if that's the only way.

  • My DD was very similar to your DD, and we did CIO at 5 months.  She is sleeping great at night now (with the exception of schedule interruptions like vacation)!

She goes to bed around 7:30, wakes up for one feeding at 3:30, then goes right back to sleep until 6:30-7:00.  If she cries at all, it is usually for less than 5 minutes.  Most nights, though, there are no tears.

    Naps, however, are another story!

  • This was me until last night when we started sleep training.  My LO is associating me w/ sleep so after much trial and error, we decided to do extinction from HSHHC.  We are going to give it a week and evaluate for improvement.  I read the no cry sleep solution and it was a good read and gave good pointers if you are against CIO.  GL

We are in a similar boat. She goes to sleep easily and on her own but wakes up several times in the night. We've been giving her a paci, but we're going to try Ferber in a few weeks.
