Breastfeeding questions?

After you pump one side completely how long does it take it to replinish?  Last night DD cluster fed the whole night and it about killed me, is there anyway to avoid cluster feeding?

Re: Breastfeeding questions?

  • to completely replenish about 2- 2 1/2 hours...the cluster feeding is probably a stage associated with a growth spurt, but frustrating..my son is doing it too

  • At 1 week, I would not be pumping at all. Let LO spend as much time on the boob as possible...she'll eventually fall into a routine...cluster feeding is very typical early on and during growth spurts (wait until week 2!).

  • It takes my breasts a few hours to refill to the point where DS can actually be full after I've pumped them pretty dry.  And I don't think there is any way to avoid cluster feeding.  It's part of breastfeeding!
  • Cluster feeding is totally normal, and there's not a whole lot you can do to stop it.  It will get better in a few weeks!

I found it difficult to pump when DD was that young, because I wasn't sure when she would need to eat next.  Pumping became easier when she was in a more predictable routine (probably around 6 weeks or so).

  • There is no way to avoid cluster feeding.  Your baby is cluster feeding to increase your supply in anticpation of a growth spurt.  You are never actually "out" of milk.  Even if it feels like your breasts are empty, you still have more milk, especially if you pump.
  • no..there is nothing to do about cluster feeding except feed your LO.  This is helping your body build up your supply so you are doing everything right.  You may be tempted to supplement but this will only decrease your supply. Cluster feeding is normal for many babies and it won't last too long.  (Mine cluster feed for 4 weeks I think) GL
