safer to use latches or seat beat?

We are installing our rear facing graco snugride car seat. Is it safer to use the latch system or the seatbelt?

thanks

  • Depends on the make and model of the car... why don't you take it and get it checked out?

  • LATCH is not necessarily safer, just more convenient and makes installation easier.  The middle is *usually* the safest place (unless your car owner's manual instructs otherwise) so if you have LATCH in the middle you should use that, if not, the seatbelt is just as safe.

  • our fire department made us mover ours from the center with seat belts to behind me with the latches.

we just had our car seat installed and checked last night.  They showed us both ways so we would know if we had to move it.  They both worked and are tested safe but the latch system was SO much more tight and had the car seat base not moving at all.  The seat belt was tight but not as tight.  I would recommend going with the latch.  It is also a lot easier to install.

  • I have the Graco Snug 32 and when I took it to the police they said latches as did my car's manual.
  • Take the seat to your local FD and have them install it....

This is true.  When we had ours inspected, they said to put it in the middle with the seat belt, instead of one of the sides with LATCH, because the safest place to be is in the middle of the backseat.  After they were done inspecting it, it was tighter than we were able to get it in the middle - it barely moves at all now.  GL!

i installed this am with the latch, and boy it doesnt move at all! looked in the car manual and they said try latch first, then seatbelt.

    looks like latch for us.

  • LATCH is for convenience only - it has nothing to do with safety.

I was planning on using seat belt, but in my husband's pick up, they don't lock (until you hit the breaks) so the latches were safer.
  • We have had 2 different vehicles since I had DD, so we have tried both different methods.  I have found that the latches keep the car seat a lot more secure.  The only thing that gets me is that is a pain in the you-know-what to get out.  If you latch it in, don't ever plan on taking less than 30 minutes to get it out (unless DH is an "expert" like mine).  haha.

This. We took it to be inspected and they wouldnt let us use latch system in the middle because they were the left and right latches. They re-installed using seatbelt in center and its tighter and seems more secure then with the latches.

Latch and seat belt are just as safe. The safest place for your car seat is in the middle, in case of side impact crashes. I agree with everybody else when they say to find out when a carseat inspection is being done and take it to one of those.

Same! Ours made us move from the center to passenger seat - to use LATCH.
