Parenting after a Loss

I'm being pressured to potty train...

I posted about this before, but in my moms group there are at least 5 women who started potty training at around 6 months.  They keep asking me when I'm going to start.  I really was not going to do this until age 2....am I so wrong here???

  • Yikes, I'm with you. Obviously Aidan & Ethan are the same age, and I can't imagine how I would even go about that right now??

  • Really? Geez that seems like a little much to me. He'll pee in the potty when he's ready. I only started to hear about people doing it earlier than age 2 since being on the boards.
  • IMO, as someone who has worked with children in the potty training stage, I think it's a little ridiculous to start potty training as early as 6 months. I get 14 months but 6? A child is really too young to comprehend what is going on at that age. I guess, to each their own. We're not planning on working with DS until about 18 months or maybe a little earlier before baby #2 comes.

  • Iwould tell them you are waiting for Ethan to give you signals he's ready.   While I understand that potty training this young IS achievable, it's definitly not the norm.
  • WHAT? ?No way, jose. ?I'm not even thinking about that until Anderson's two, unless he starts showing interest earlier. ?Which I doubt any of your friends' 6 month olds were doing. ?Yikes!

  • While I can kind of understand the desire not to change another diaper, I went into this adventure knowing I would be changing them for a long time.  6 months is way to young.  And it can backfire and make the whole experience much longer and much tougher then necessary.

  • Frankly I'd rather change a diaper than have to clean out a baby potty or pick out poo from a baby potty...gross.

  • Hhmm... Emma couldn't walk to the potty or crawl to it. How on earth can you train her to go on it. I think that's way too early

  • You can make a child not want to use the potty by pushing them before they're ready.

  • my baby will be 6 months old in a week and she can't even master blowing raspberries for crying out loud.  she'll be potty trained by the time she goes to college.  hopefully.
  • That is insane! Children are simply not mentally developed enough to be potty trained at that age. These women have a loooong road ahead of them!
  • THANK YOU!! When it first came up I thought that maybe I was misinformed....since it continues to be brought up I'm starting to feel stupid.  Thank you for making me feel like I'm not the worst mama on the block for not potty training my kid yet.

  • Yeah, that's pretty much ridiculous. They grow up too fast as it, no need to push it, ladies.
  • Coming from someone who has gotten a little guy to use the potty in the last six months (and he'll be 3 on Monday,) that is absurd.  I'm sorry but that is not training.  At six months, the parent is doing all the work.  I considered my child potty trained when he could whip out his own peep, aim in the toilet and go when he feels the need.  AND... he only started going poop on his own without telling me or needing help in the last few weeks.  I think kids should do what they can when they feel they can.

  • Potty training at 6 months?????  WTH.....that is insane in my book!  How the heck do you even begin to potty train a 6 month old?
  • You are def. not wrong.  6 months is kinda crazy in my opinion.

    A?

You're definitely not crazy! What those women are doing isn't potty training, it's called "elimination communication," and if anything, it's training the parent to read the infant's signals and then running to the potty with them.?

True "potty training," as we know the sense of the word, is simply not possible before 18 months, usually later (esp for boys). Take your time, and E will tell you when he's ready. ?

  • Sounds way too early to me. Most boys don't fully potty train until 2.5 to 3 years old.
  • I read somewhere that children do not have the physical ability to control those muscles until 18 months.  I think six months is crazy early!  Why do people want to push their babies to grow up so fast?  I just don't get it.

  • I'd love to know how they did it.  They can't talk to tell you they have to go or even walk into the bathroom by themselves.

I started when Joey was 2.  He fought me every time we tried.  I tried everything.  He just wasn't ready.  He will be 4 in September and was just completely potty-trained at the end of June.  My pedi said that in his experience most boys are fully potty trained between the ages of 3 and 4.

  • Nope, you're doing what you feel is best for YOUR child. We didn't start potty training DD until she was 18 months or so and had shown interest in the potty. Even then, it took us a while (it didn't click for her until last summer, she was 2 1/2.).

6 months!  I think the earliest I would start would be 1.5 years old.
