Babies: 0 - 3 Months

question for preemie moms?

do you go by the adjusted age or the actual age?  i'm always curious when i see info with adjusted ages.  i'm sure you probably go by the actual age, but do you use the adjusted age for Dr's appts or when going by milestones?

Re: question for preemie moms?

  • My doct actually has a preemie chart that goes by how early babies are.  For example, my DD was born at 33 weeks.  She is in the 50% for a 33 weeker.  She isn't on the charts for her actual age.  Right now, she is 5 months old but only weighs 12 pounds and is only 23 1/4" tall.  But for her 33 weeker status, I can't complain. :)

  • my son who is now 2 was born at 26 weeks. I went by his actual age for everything except milestones. Once he turned 1 and started walking it was like night and day. You couldnt tell he was only supposed to be 9 months old at 12 months old. and now at 2 you would never know he was preemie. the Dr"s always gave me his % for actual age and adjusted age. His doc said they are supposed to go by adjusted age for growth until they are 2. Then they will start going by his actual age. Same with milestones (unless he had signifigant developmental problems)
  • I will go by actual age for Karly. She was born at 34 1/2 weeks. My son was born at 36 weeks. I was prepared to expect some delays when it came to milestones, but he has exceeded 1 year old  milestones so I am not worried about him at all. I think for milestones, it just depends on the child.

  • I use actual.
