When does school start around you?

All the school posts have me a bit weirded out.  When does school start these days?!?!  My b-day is mid August, and we never started before it - usually late August was when our first day was.  So, is it normal these days for school to start this early?

  • Ava will be starting at the co-op on the 31st next month (Key West), when I was in school we didn't start until after Labor Day (Seattle).
  • We always started after Labor Day growing up because it was sooooo hot in Kansas still and none of our schools had A/C.

Up here they start pretty early and end pretty late because of all the snow days they have built into the schedule.

Despite the fact that you probably not where I am, it sounds a lot like here!  ;)  Although I haven't looked to see the schedule...

  • It totally depends on what region of the country you are in. I think the midwest always started and ended way earlier than I did if I remember my cousin's schedules correctly. Whereas I never started until after Labor Day in CT. My dad, who grew up in IL, always said it was because they needed kids to help with the planting and harvesting though I doubt that holds true as much now. But it probably is why the schedules were different originally....
  • It starts late august here, like the last week. We normally get out mid-June. I think all these that are starting up now get out earlier in the summer.

  • County schools start mid-August, because of the snow days.  The uni starts last Wednesday in August.

  • Growing up in Seattle, we started right after Labor Day.  When I started teaching in NC, we started the first week of August.  It sucked -- my birthday is July 31st and I always went back to work a week or so before that, whereas growing up I still had another 5 weeks of playing!  In 2005, NC changed so school starts on August 25th in most districts.  It still starts after Labor Day in Seattle.

  • Public schools started yesterday, private started today.  Our district is on a very modified year-round program.  The kids have a few extra breaks during the year, but start earlier in the summer.
  • The elementary and middle schools in my school district are on year-round, and the high school starts at the end of the month.

#1 goes to private pre-school at our temple though (will go there through kindergarten), and he did the summer camp program which ended yesterday, and he will start for the fall semester on the 24th of August.  (There are a lot of days off in September though for Jewish high holidays).

  • I always started Mid-August in Oklahoma so that school let out the end of May, and families could manage harvest season better (June has a lot of winter wheat ripening)

My kids start school the Tuesday after Labor Day and get out the first Friday in June.  We have no spring break, but rather an Easter break (Good Friday thru the Tuesday after Easter Sunday)

  • Here in Washington school starts after Labor Day, I think I saw Sept 10 or 11 on a school marquee. In Arizona, where I taught, school started last Friday (year round school) and next Monday for other schools.
