I was offered a used pump by my cousin and was pretty excited to be getting a high quality pump for free...until I did a little research and found out the it's really not recommended even if you replace the replaceable parts.
The risk of virus or bacteria particles somehow getting into the diaphram AND still being viable after two years of storage AND working their way into my babies milk supply seems really low, though. Like driving in the car with my child is probably a way higher risk - and it would be such a cost saver.
But of course, I don't want to put my child at risk for no reason, either. I'll talk to my doc about it, but wondered if anybody else has a used pump, etc.
Thanks for the feedback!
Re: Used pump
I think it depends on the type of pump. If it is a Medela PISA or PISO (I'm not familiar with any other models), then I would because no milk goes into the actual pump.
That's just me. I'm sure alot of other people will disagree with me though.
I bought my pump second hand, but I have an Ameda Purely Yours. (The PY is certified for use by more than one person by the FDA, btw, because it uses a closed pumping system; there is no way for cross-contamination if you purchase a new Hygienikit.)
I love it, and I would definitely recommend it... it's also quite a bit cheaper than the PIS.
Ditto
I bought a used Medela PISA (from someone I don't know
) because after seeing the pump in person and having used a hospital pump - I don't see how the previous user could realistically get milk to a place that it would contaminate my parts when I use it. I do have my own attachment parts/tubes - I wouldn't share those. They are the same ones I had to buy ($50) to use the hospital pump.
Like you said, it just seemed highly unlikely to be a problem.
I got a used pump from a coworker, but bought a new one after reading the same scary stuff you're seeing. It wasn't worth it to me to be worried about a possibility, but I really beat myself up about spending the extra $ when we already had a pump. Also now that I'm pumping, I think it would have been completely fine to use the used PISA. I just don't see it as a real risk.
Do whatever *you* need to do to be comfortable. If that's a new pump, buy one and don't worry.
