You're not supposed to restrict a EBF baby, right?

OMG, I just weighed my 7.5 wk old and she's almost 12.5 lbs!!!  I know FFers are supposed to limit to 40 oz a day or something like that and I've always heard to feed a BF baby as much as they want.  To moms with chunky babies ... what were you told by your pedi about this?

TIA

  • I FF and BF'd DD. I never limited her intake w/ either feeding method.

  • Evan was over 13 pounds and 25 inches at his 2 month appointment, and we were never worried about him.  He was pretty high on the charts, but nobody even batted an eye.  You're right to just let her eat when she wants to.  He eventually slowed down and by one year was right at 50% for weight.  Congrats on your baby!

  • If baby is hungry, feed baby.  :-)

DS was 9.7 at birth and gained fast.  He's evened out lately though, at 16m he's been hovering around 24-25lbs for about 3 months or so.  He started walking & is losing his chub.

  • I fed both on demand. DS was ALWAYS on the boob. Pedi never said anything about it.
  • DS started off big (just over 9lbs) and gained quickly in the first few months, staying in the 95th percentile until about 6mo.  He eventually tapered off and is now a petite toddler.

It's fine to keep feeding her.

  • I never limited.  Ethan was probably 12lbs at 2mo but Brooke never broke 12lbs until maybe her 9mo visit.  Was 14lbs at her 12mo visit.
  • i feed on demand (EBF) and both i and my pediatrician believe that you feed a hungry baby.  my ds has gained lots of weight very quickly and i specifically asked about his weight gain.  pedi said "we don't worry about newborns gaining too much weight by bfing.  in older babies you can try to soothe by other means first (such as paci, rocking to sleep, stimulation) but if baby is upset - go ahead and feed."

  • My 8.8 lb baby was over 11 lbs by 1 month.  I think he was 14ish by the 2nd month.

You're fine.  Keep feeding on demand.

Sam's weight fell dramatically between 6 and 9 months, I think it was just self correcting, as his dad and I aren't big people.
