How do you prevent nipple blanching?

If you have Raynaud's and have this happen a lot, what can you do to prevent it? ?This is happening all day long and it's killing me. ?I've read what's on kellymom.com about it. ?I think I will try taking more calcium (and I wonder if it's getting worse recently because I've cut out dairy ... gassy babies), but other than that, any tips?

  • One thing that helped me was keeping really warm -- I'd grab a blanket and wrap it around my chest after DD finished nursing. Don't know if that will work for anyone else, though.

  • I tried vitamin b6...didn't seem to help.

Cutting out caffeine, though--that helps a lot.  I tried adding it back in the other day and had white and purple-spotted nips.  Oh the pain.

I also like to wear fatter nursing pads...I think it's like insulation but that could just be psychosomatic, LOL.

I try to keep my nipples warm after feedings. Someone on this board said she put a disposable heating pad between her bra and the nursing pad and it helped.

  • ugh it is SO PAINFUL :(  i used to sleep with a heating pad so i could throw it on the left breast after nursing at night.  during the day i would sometimes use heat, sometimes just layer up.  but then sometimes fabric irritated it too.  one thing that worked for me as a quick temporary fix was cupping my hand over the nipple to keep it warm without irritating it by touching it.
