Those whose LOs HATE the car/carseat

What do you do on car rides?  We stay home more often than not because my daughter screams her head off on car rides.  I bought her a toy that goes across her carseat because I though the distraction would help.  A pacifier is futile because it pops out two seconds after I put it in.

Re: Those whose LOs HATE the car/carseat

  • I posted yesterday, they suggested feed her first so she;ll nap in the car. Favorite music, rain drops, binkies, you name it. She doens't love the car seat but its hard if it's just me driving.

  • If a car ride lasts longer than 15 minutes, I am in for it.  I rotate:

    -shaking a water bottle

    -paci/teething toy

    -crumpling & ripping paper

    -playing with her feet

-humming on the top of her head (this puts her to sleep if she's worn herself out with all the fussing)

  • We have a suede car seat..so she sweats like crazy in it.  We have bought a cover for it, but I am not sure if we will switch it out yet.  Adjusting the straps to the next setting helped a bit..but yeah I stay home a lot because of this..it sucks..  Makes going for walks impossible too. Blah!

  • someone rides in the back with him.  if I'm alone, I plan trips when he's fed, dry, and its not necessarily naptime.  Sometimes its an ok ride, sometimes its a screamfest, sometimes he falls asleep without a peep.  But he's almost 5 mos now.  At your LO's age, it was mostly a screamfest and I stayed home all day.

Honestly, at that young, unless someone is in the back with her nothing is really gonna help much.

Sorry I don't have anything better.  I've been there though and it friggin sucks!

  • DD doesn't hate her carseat but she definitely doesn't like it.  I make sure to nurse her right before putting her in it to make sure she's happy.  I sit in the backseat with DD so that if she starts fussing, I can give her a binkie or talk to her and try to calm her down.  If that doen't work, we pull over and I nurse her.  I definitely nurse more when we're out and about than when we're at home just to keep her from crying during the entire outing.  I haven't taken her out by myself yet and I'm so nervous to do that.

  • Rolling the window helps some (creates white noise). I thought I was going to die for a while with all her crying, but once she got better at playing with toys on her own, she would be distracted by them. Now she's happy most of the time.
  • WHITE NOISE CD

For reals.  DD screamed in the car for 4 months.  One day I popped that into the CD player, cranked it up, and she immediately fell asleep.  She's been great ever since.  I swear it's worth a shot.

  • I listen to my ipod with one ear.  It distracts me from the crying, so I can focus on driving.  I make sure he is clean and fed.  That is all I can do.  I have a couple of good toys he can get into his mouth that would not be dangerous in an accident.
  • J used to cry if I turned the AC down, so I bundle up in the car and crank it along with the Baby Mozart CD I played when he was in the womb. 9 times out of 10 it puts him to sleep.
  • Honestly? Crank the radio! She loves the distraction!

  • Nothing I do seems to make DD happy in the car. Some days she's perfect-barely even a peep-but most days she starts screaming the minute she sees the car. Sitting in the back with her helps sometimes, and putting a mirror in front of her also helps a little, but most of the time it's just a scream fest. GL!

  • I'm sorry you all have to go through this too, but I'm glad my dd isn't the only one who does this!  I've tried feeding her right before we leave, but it doesn't make a difference.  I'll have to try the white noise cd.  It hasn't helped to turn on a staticky station, so I won't have my hopes too high.  Aren't babies supposed to fall asleep in the car?!!
  • I have her favorite lullaby CD in the car. I also downloaded a bunch of soothing songs from itunes onto a cd. (rockabye baby!/hushabye baby!) the best 99 cents spent though was the mountain rain. it lasts about 10 minutes. If she isn't asleep from the other tunes I put it on the mountain rain track, turn up the volume and she is out!
  • Baby Einstein saved our car rides. She is a different baby ever since we started playing those CDs when we are in the car. Other times, I just put the radio on some obscure AM station for white noise.
