1st Trimester

update -- its been a while

So I went to the doc on Monday and everything is GREAT! I got to see the baby move and the best part; hear the heart beat! They put me at 10w0d on Monday which is 1 day ahead of what I was originally told, but whatever. I'm just happy to know everything is going well and now I'm letting myself get more and more excited and outed myself to everryyone, even on my myspace. 2 weeks left in the first trimester, WHOOHOO!!!

I do have a question though. The doc told me to think about having some prenatal testing done for things like down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, nueral tube defect, etc. What are some of your opinions on these tests, and who has had them and were they benficial to you? Thanks in advance. I hope everyone else is having as great a time with their pregnancy as I am!! :)

  • Congrats! You sound so excited! I have no answer to your test question... but I'd like to know the answer too :)

  • We are having the NT Scan done next week which scans for Downs, etc. There are alot of different opionions on having it done. We are choosing to do this since my DH's one aunt has a son who has DS and we would just like to know ahead of time so we can prepare for the baby with any special needs he/she may have. We would NEVER terminate the pregnancy because of results...
Married my BEST FRIEND on December 1, 2007. Started TTC in March 2008. Found out we were expecting our first child in October 2008 - but had a m/c in December 2008 - resulting in a d&e. Met with a RE in May 2009 and set a plan - but conceived unexpectedly on our own! Our precious little Sophia was born on February 9, 2010! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • Congrats! We got to hear the heartbeat on monday and it was amazing.

About the different tests. You can have them done but the thing to think about is what would you do if any of the tests are positive? The other thing to think about is the tests are not 100% accurate. Just some things to think about if you want to get the tests done.

  • My doctor said that the tests would most definitly be negative for me sue to age, race, family history, etc......but that I could still do them if I wanted too.  I did just for the extra ultrasound.  If it comes back positive you can do an amniocentisis to confirm the test result.  I would never terminate my pregnancy for any reason so I didn't care about the results.  It would be nice to be prepared though incase something was wrong.

  • Thanks everyone! I might go ahead with some not so extensive testing and see what that shows. The only reason for the testing, like most of you said, is just to have extra time to get prepared. I'm not terminating this pregnancy under any circumstances (unless it would cost me my life), so the results wouldn't matter in  that way. We would still def love the baby either way, just like to know what's going on. Thanks again! And good luck to all of you :)
