Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Baby whisperer & potty training

If you've read this book are you going to start potty training early like she suggests? She suggests starting between 9 -15 months becuase babies are so willing to please. And that babies in North America are the oldest babies in the world to potty train. Just wondering when people are planning to start potty training?

Re: Baby whisperer & potty training

  • My mom watches my DD full time and she has started to put her on the potty. When ever she sees her "grunting" she rusher her to the toilet. DD has actually gone a few times in the toilet. She gets excited at the sound it makes, then they flush it down and wave good bye...

Yesterday my mom said DD went over to the toilet and was pulling at her diaper so my mom sat her on the toilet and she did a poop! This could all be coincidences though.  The only problem is, after that she refused to put a diaper back on...she finally settled for one of my neices pull ups bc they had Dora on them....

  • I would like to start introducing the potty around 2 years old, but I don't know how it will go. On another note, The Baby Whisperer bugs the crap out of me. She is so smug and condescending and her gratuitous use of the word "luv" is annoying.

  • My "Other" response was -- when my child shows readiness signs.

That Baby Whisperer woman is a freakin' quack!  I read her book before my first was born.  She was the source of my stress in the early weeks because of her insistence on the fact that her approach IS the one-size-fits-all approach.

So certainly I was doing something wrong if my child wasn't doing what she was supposed to.  I still have that book but will burn it soon--no joke.  I despise that woman.

To hear that she takes the same approach to potty training makes me want to throw up on her.  You can try all you want to PT when YOU are ready.  If your kid isn't ready, it ain't gonna happen!  (or it will happen--over a LONG period of time)

  • I voted for 15-18 months but I may start before then if DD is communicating well and showing signs.  I agree with her- it's freaking ridiculous that kids in the US are the latest in the world to potty train.  When i hear about almost 4 year olds not being trained I cringe.  I hope to God this does not happen to me.  I think there is a window of opportunity and if you miss it you are done for.  I hope to have her fully trained by 2.
  • I love the Baby Whisperer; I think she is full of common sense advice to watch/listen then respond to a child's cues.

With that said, biologically a child generally has a window of willingness to try toilet training around 18 months.  I'll look for the cues and hopefully start around then.
