our health care saga

I don't know if anyone else has been reading up about how health insurance companies are jacking up the prices of small businesses to force people out of the plans, but we've recently become on of the victims. ?I can't get health insurance through St. Eds., because I'm not a full time professor. ?DH owns his own business, so he's responsible. ?We can't get a family plan because dh takes 3 meds for seizures. ?Even though they are under control, and have been for several years, we have been denied by every carrier for his pre-existing condition. ?SO--we had all of us under my husband's company (company plans usually can't discriminate for pre-ex. conditions). ?Got the current bill in the mail, and get this--our bill for 6 WEEKS of coverage for us (family a four) and dh's business partner (single in his 20s) went up to $4200. ?That's $4200 for 6 weeks of coverage. ?Yeah. ?

So I've been filling out applications all night for just myself and the kids. ?And you've gotta be freaking kidding me--they all want to know what meds we have taken in the past 10 years and what drs. we have seen in the last 10 years. ?C R A Z Y. ?My head is spinning I'm so freaked out about this. ??

Ditto!!  And it sucks that there are so many hard-working families out there in the same situation.  I hope you get some real solutions soon.

PS. You should definitely send your story to our senators and your US representative.  They need to know that things like this are going on with their constituents while they're in the position to do something about it.

(((hugs))) I hope you can find something more affordable soon.

The healthcare situation in this country is deplorable. I spent nearly two years paying COBRA because of my employment situation (working freelance and temp jobs). DH and I weren't married yet, so I couldn't get on his plan. It sucked, and that was just for one person. I looked into getting an individual plan, but like your DH, I had pre-existing conditions that were covered only if I went from group plan to group plan.

How many hours would you need to teach to be eligible for health insurance? Is there a way to bump up your hours at all?  I thought I heard something about a tax benefit or some other sort of credit for COBRA? Have you looked into that? I didn't really pay much attention to it when I saw it in the news because it didn't apply to us at the time.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of faith in Texas' US Senators and Cookie's Congressman (she lives near me, I'm pretty sure we have the same Representative). I agree that she should go ahead and send her story to them, but I'm not holding my breath that they'll actually care. I'd bet she gets a form letter/email back in response about the evils of government health care, the irony of which would just kill me since members of Congress have health care provided by - you guessed it - the government.

  • OMG!  This is horrible.  It's things like this that make me realize that something needs to be done about our healthcare system.  I don't want to start a political debate but I agree with you...how can an average family afford $4200 every 6 weeks?!!!  This would bankrupt almost anyone!  I hope you get some help with this soon.  I am so sorry!

  • Ugh, I am so sorry cookie!  My parents have been navigating the no-group-insurance thing for @9 years now and are counting down the days (only a couple weeks now) until they are completely in Medicare.  They didn't have the group option and ended up in the Texas Risk Pool.  Can't say I understand all the intricacies of it, but essentially someone *has* to take you.  But my parents have been paying a ton under it, but not as much as you stated.

and mcgee, just b/c they're Republican doesn't mean they are against health care reform completely.  ie: Jindal has some ideas that I think would actually work.

  • Oh my goodness. That is insane. I thought it was crazy that we pay that amount for 6 months for Rhett and I. Six weeks - there is no way! I am so sorry and I really hope you are able to find something more affordable.

It's actually been increasing for everyone.  Most people don't notice though b/c there employer picks up alot of the tab.  That amount is crazy though,  I can't imagine trying to afford that.

ticky tack point.  I think you mean that members of Congress have health insurance provided by the government.  Which to be fair is it's employer(although it is a super nice plan, we should all be so lucky)

I know... I was just hoping that if enough people contact them then maybe they'll listen.  Every time I've written to them I get a form letter/newsletter email back about "Washington elites" (um, hello, you're one of them) ruining the country we hold dear.  Sigh.

  • Oh my goodness!!  That is just ridiculous!!  I am sorry.  Healthcare is so broken right now and unfair.  I hope you all can get something. Is there any alliance or org he can join as a business owner that offers healthcare?
