when to introduce binkie and bottles??

for all of you breastfeeding mothers, when do/did you introduce your baby to the binkie and bottles?  also which binkie and bottle brands seem to work for you in the newborn stages?  thanks!

Re: when to introduce binkie and bottles??

  • We introduced the bottle around four weeks and I think the binky was around two or three weeks.  I registered for the soothie brand binkies but dd preferred one that a friend gave me from Nordstrom with a silly phrase on it.  We started with Born Free bottles and she did great with those from the beginning.  But, she was a great nurser from the begiing too, I don't think it had anything to do with the bottles we chose.

  • We started giving her a paci in the hospital around 2 days and she had her first bottle of pumped breastmilk at around 1 week. She's always gone between breast and bottle just fine (I mostly BF, but pump a bottle here and there) and she takes several different brands of pacis just fine too.

When she was a newborn she did best with MAM pacifiers and Born Free bottles. Now she takes those but also takes Nuk, Soothies, Avent and NIP pacis and Avent and Born to Grow bottles as well.

  • I introduced the binky around 4 weeks after much begging from dh, and the binky we have always used and loved is the gumdrop he got from the hospital,  its been 6 months and we still havent lost that one binky!   We didnt introduce the bottle until 2.5 months and I still havent found a bottle we are 100% happy with.

I definitely would introduce either until breastfeeding is completely established!

Those are the NIP ones (at least that is what it says on the Paci) - DD is sucking on one right now that says "whine connoisseur" on it :)

  • We did binky right away and bottle at 10 days. DH fed her a bottle of pumped milk every evening for a couple months and she was a binky hound for 3-ish months, then just forgot about it one day. I tried to give her one the other day and she just chewed on it. :)

  • Ben never took a pacifier, even though I desperately wanted him to at one point.  :)

We started a bottle around 4 weeks I think... but he was supplemented from the get go, using a syringe and tube while he sucked on one of our fingers.  So he might have not been picky after all of that.

The brand all depends on your kid.  Some kids care, some don't.  Pick one, buy one or two bottles, give them a try.  Use slow flow nipples - the slowest they have.

  • Soothie paci in the hospital and we stuck with it, amazing what those things can do!

Bottle at about a month and only about once a week after that for the better part of her first year.

This happened with us too.  Right at 10 months dd refused the paci and would give me very strange looks like I was offending her by offering it too her.  She finds the soothie ones laying around sometimes and seems to think they're nice to chew on (teething pain?).  I miss the paci days because they were so relaxing for her but happy she gave them up on her own.
