no-scratch mittens

Did your baby need them?

Re: no-scratch mittens

  • We never used them.  I had 20 pairs (to match all their outfits Embarrassed) and never used a one.  I kept their fingernails short and I never had a problem with them scratching their face.

  • Had a basket full and never used them. I cut her nails while I fed and that helped the scratching. She also use to go completely nuts when you would put them on her . But I have a friend who swears by them.
  • We didn't use those, but we did need the gowns with the mittens on the end...they don't come off.  The mittens don't stay on more than about 30 seconds...but the gowns with the mittens protected his little face.

  • We used the gowns and sleepers with the mittens on them.  If her clothes didn't have them on them, we used socks.  They stayed on much better than the mittens.

Ditto this.  We needed them -- Ava was constantly gouging her face (even with short nails).  The mittens were always coming off, so the built-in ones were the best.

Where do I find these? I haven't seen them.

  • i think the only time he had on mittens was the day we left the hospital (his coming home outfit had built-in mittens), and one time that I took him for a walk in the freezing cold.  cal used his hands/fingers so much, from day one, that we felt bad putting mittens on him.  his fingernails were long and we were afraid to cut them and tried filing them to no avail (they were too soft & bendy), so he did end up scratching himself a bit.  he didn't seem to suffer for it; it was more of a cosmetic thing.

  • I haven't used any.  It wasn't an issue until yesterday (at one month old-- but that was clearly my own fault for putting off filing her nails).  She gave herself a scratch yesterday at the mall.  I am pretty sure she would have found a way to get them off of her-- she's a daggone houdini!  Also, most of the mittens we got (if not all) were gerber and SUPER small.  I have a pretty big baby with big hands so I don't think they would have worked.  I think the shirts with the fold over sleeves would have been more successful if we needed them.

ditto this - gowns with the parts that turn over....

  • They are hard to find, but they are on outfits, mainly tshirt style outfits (not onesies...)

They are on his pajamas right now, but we don't use the fold over part at this age.  They are carters brand.  That same brand - there is a ton at the marshalls here.  They are pajamas all ages and they have a top and bottom - they have them.

Plus I've seen them on gowns - he has a winnie the pooh gown and some circo gowns from target that have them.  DS scratches himself all the time - even now and I still just file his nails with an emory board.  In the first week of his life, DH and I went crazy trying to see all the outfits he had that had those flip over parts (as the hospital had that when he was there).

  • i use both, the gowns are good for bed but during the day, if we go out, it's weird having her in the gowns because you have to lift the gown up to put her in the car seat.  She hates having me put them on, but once I get them on, she doesn't care.  She's already scratched her face once so I try to keep them on.
