My DH and I plan to start trying for our first baby next month. Any recommendations on prenatals? I'm not sure whether I should call my OB for a prescription or use OTC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
My OB's office told me that most prenatal vitamins are pretty similar and that OTC ones are just fine. They said just make sure they have the recommended amount of folic acid. I'm taking Rainbow Light Prenatal Vitamins because they are the only ones that don't upset my stomach.
The prenatals my OB prescribed were $60 a month with my insurance (no thank you). I have been taking the One a Day Prenatal with DHA. They have 800mg of Folic Acid, which is the daily recommended amount for pregnant women, but Rx usually have 1000mg. You might want to talk to your OB to see if they think it is necessary to have the extra amount.
The ones with DHA kind of upset my stomach, so I have to take one without that, and I will get a special DHA supplement when I get pregnant. (Lipil DHA is a different formula that doesn't upset my stomach).
I'm 38 and my OB/gyn said to get the ones at Costco. I think they're Nature's Made or something like that. When I switched to an RE I told him that I was taking those and he said that they were fine and there was no reason to upgrade to the Rx ones.
I take Target prenatal vitamins and also add 800mcg more in a folic acid supplement.
IMO, unless your insurance covers Rx's getting prescription PNV are a waste of money (I pay $7 for 200 PNV as opposed to $30 a month for 30 PNV for Rx) and there is not much difference between the two which I confirmed with a couple Dr's.

My RE said that OTC are absolutely fine, as long as they have at least 800 mg of folic acid. I checked mine - which are from CVS - and they do.
He also gave me a bunch of prescription samples, so maybe your OB could give you some?
