Fridge, THEN freezer?

I have a couple bottles of BM that I kept in the fridge for about 3 days now.  I had one boob on rest because it was bleeding so I was pumping and giving a bottle every other feeding.  Now that it's healed, I have a couple bottles of BM leftover.  They have been in the fridge for about 3 days and I don't need to use them.  Can I put them in the freezer now?  I know they are still good, but I'm not sure what the timing "rules" are for moving from fridge to freezer....TIA

  • Yup, go for it. I work 12 hour shifts every Sat and Sun, so my expressed milk is refrigerated for 2-3 days before I freeze it (we feed from my frozen stash, and what I pump goes in to the stash for later). We haven't had any troubles with it. When in doubt, go to www.kellymom.com for lots of answers.
  • I have heard that even if you plan to freeze, you should put it in the fridge first to cool it, THEN freeze it.

Kinda like when you thaw, but in reverse.

  • I was told by my LC that freezing as soon as possible is best, especially if you are prone to your milk taking on an unpleasant flavor  (from fat breakdown).  It's still "good" to use regardless, but  babies who are picky about taste are more likely to take it if it was freshly frozen.

  • I would just put a line with red marker or something on it to remind me to smell it when I defrosted it.  But I would imagine it wouldnt be a problem.
