Lillian is grabbing for everything now and I find myself saying "No" a lot more. I am wondering if its too early or if everyone started before 6 months? The survey says....

Probably around 6.5-7 months. We say "no, no, no" in a softer tone when she's going after something that's dangerous. When she stops or lets go, we praise her. Sometimes she'll do it over and over and over again because she loves the praise she gets from stopping. lol. But she understands what it means.
I have been using no since she started getting into things, but that doesn't mean she gets it. I am afraid it is going to backfire and become her first real word, so I have been trying to redirect more often.
There's a great "Positive Discipline" book for babies & toddlers (part of a series for different ages) -- it explains that it's years before they really understand the concept of "No".
Grabbing for things is age-appropriate behavior at this point, so we're better off trying things like redirection.

Prob around 6 months. We say "no-no" or "don't touch" or "that's not for you" LOL. If it is something dangerous I have definitely said NO in a more stern voice. He knows what it means now too - I'd say that happened around 8/9 months. He gets mad at me when I tell him no-no!

Really? I am surprised at this. Because I feel like Oakley definitely knows what it means. He will be leaning for a cord or something and I will say no-no and he will sit back down and kick his legs and yelp.

Huh. Well my baby must be of the genius type because she definitely knows what it means.
Around 7 months or so. When I was BF him, DS decided to pinch me, claw me, and push/kick away from me. Sometimes he flips himself completely over and tries to crawl on me while still BF. So I say "No" and flip him back into position. He is starting to get it. If DH says no, though, DS tends to stop what he is doing.

I tell him "no", but I feel like I'm wasting my time. He just looks at me and smiles. I don't know how much he can comprehend. But I try to have a stern face, lol.

I started as soon as she grabbed something I didnt want her to have about 5 months and then I would just move it and it was fine. Of course I say No in a sweet mommy voice.

My Baby Week by Week says that most babies know what the word means around 9 months. Just like they know the word Dada and Mama. This doesn't mean that when they say "Dada" they know it is the person, but they do know the word by hearing it before they can say it.?

I could have sworn it said age 2 or 3, but perhaps I'm confusing it with something else. I'm at work and it's at home, so I can't go look it up to see what it said. Sorry!

I started when she was 8 months. I only use it for really important things at this point though so it doesn't get wore out and so she can slowly start to pick it up. I use it whenever she tries to touch our computer cords or anything dangerous. I think she is slowly starting to understand me. She used to not react at all now she will stop and at least acknowledge me. I don't yell I just firmly say Natalie NO, and sometime repeat it 2 or 3 times.
Re: When did you start telling LO "No?"
i started when p was about lil's age. he's kinda starting to get it, but not really lol.
