Changing pad covers...waste of money?

I had these on my registry and at least 3 different people in my family told me these were a waste. The pad is on top of the changing table and a white vinyl-y  material and I put two sheet like covers on my registry to make it more comfy/not as cold. Everyone tells me that he will immediately pee or poop on the cover and I should leave it off so I can just wipe down the pad instead of constantly washing the cover in the wash.

Also, I had one family member give me disposable changing pad covers...like paper towel material, but thicker.

What are your thoughts? Should I buy something more necessary and skip the covers?

Re: Changing pad covers...waste of money?

  • I use them.  I have a few of them.  LO doesnt poop or pee on them constantly and I just put a different one on if he does.  I just think they make it more comfortable for him... and also he doesnt slide around as much

  • I use the changing pad every single day for most of her changes, and I've only had to wash the cover once.  And that time it was due to a massive blowout that was EVERYWHERE.

So I think they're worth it.  When I put her on there to dress her, I'd hate for her to put her little back against cold vinyl!

  • I think they look nicer with a cover over them so I also got the Boppy brand changing table mats to go on top of the cover.  They come in a 3 pack and are super easy to just change and toss in the wash.

  • I have 3 covers. Yes, you'll go through them frequently but I would still get them. I wouldn't use a disposable, you will destroy many, many trees that way!

I even have a little changing pad that goes over the changing station on our pack n play when we change him downstairs.

  • I use a changing pad cover b/c it's softer on his skin than going w/out. Put I put waterproof pads on the cover that are easy to drop in the wash. I have maybe 10 of those. I wash the cover once a week or when he pees on it. Plus, i prefer the look of a covered changing pad.

  • We use a cover, but we also put a cloth diaper down as well on top of the cover that way if there are blowouts we can just toss the cloth diaper and preserve the changing table cover for as long as possible.  We haven't had an issue yet...
  • I only got one.... BIG mistake! One night around 2am, I was changing DD and she pooped all over it, so then I had nothing else to put on the pad. The next day, I went and bought 2 more. But we old do laundry once a week, so not having a spare could put us without one for a few days. I would have at least 2.

  • I love ours.  We wash it every week or so (or if ds pees or poops on it) but it covers up that white plastic material you talked about and it's much more cozy for his little bottom to be on!  I say NOT a waste of money!

  • I don't have one of those big fluffy changing pads, just the cheap thin one that came with my changing table.  I use waterproof pads that are thin and I just put them on top of the changing table pad.  When DS pees/poos/pukes on them I put a new one on.  They were cheap, maybe $10 for a pack of three.
  • You only need one or two.  I have one, and I also lie a cloth
diaper on top for quick changing on poop smudges and as a handy wipe.
  • I just put down burp cloths and change them as necessary.
  • agree with pp about the covers, I use them and don't have to wash them very often.  About the disposable changing pad cover, I buy the huge size ones and cut them in half.  I put them in my diaper bag for when I"m out, I can put it down on the changing tables they have in rest rooms.  I feel like it's a little cleaner and I can throw it out if it gets gross or use it again if I want.
  • I feel they are a waste.  I had one on there and LO pooped and peed on it.  Sure it keeps her warm and keeps the pee from running all over the table but I end up having to wash it way too often.  I know people who don't even use the changing pad- they just change their LO on the floor.

  • i have covers.  they look nice & Lo doesnt always pee all over them.
  • Really??? I wouldn't put LO on the vinyl..I love mine..I also put a sheet saver on top of that just incase poop or pee get on it.I can just grab the sheet saver off if the blow out hit the pad.

We have both of these as well. As for the disposable one's they're good to use when you're out.

We've been doing exactly this for 6 months.

I don't know why someone would tell you that.  What baby wants to be put on a cold and sctatchy vinyl table?  I have about 3 covers and I also have some square soft felt pads (bought at BRU) that I put on top of the cover.  So, I am changing the pads more often than the covers.  But my DD#1 is 2 1/2 and I cannot imagine having survived vomit and diarrhea with no cover!
  • We have 2 and use them both. But we also use one of those flannel lap pad type things on top of it to prevent us from having to change it over and over again. A friend of mine uses a flannel receiving blanket on top of the changing pad cover. I wouldn't put DD on top of just the vinyl part - you're right! It's cold or sweaty (depending on the weather) and probably not too comfy.

Just wait until your LO is older and eating real foods.  Gross!  And at BRU or Target are the square felt type pads that I mentioned above.

  • We just use receiving blankets because when she does poo or pee on them they're very easy to switch out
  • I personally like the covers... it gives LO a soft surface to lie on.  We have 2.
  • We have covers and I don't have to change them all that often, maybe once a week. DS doesn't pee or poop on them. I couldn't find a color that matched DS's nursery so I bought a towel that matches and I use that (tucked in nicely) when we have guests over so everything flows nicely. I think the disposable covers are a waste, I'd but the real deal. They aren't very expensive.
  • I love mine and have only had her have an "accident" on them once.
  • I have a changing pad cover that is kind of a terry cloth material. I also have a bunch of those waterproof "lap pads" that I  keep on top of the changing pad. Those are always getting messy and I change them out frequently but they are not fitted - they're just flat and lay on top of the covered changing pad. I wash the cover itself about once a week or so.
  • I also love the Boppy changing pad covers. They are so soft and they come with a mat that is easily washed.

  • I have 3 that I change out as needed. I think they are great and they aren't constantly being pooped/peed on. I may need to change once a week or so.
  • I have them because they are better for her to lay on, I just use the small white pad covers also, so if she gets anything on them I just change those not the whole cover.
  • We have one but cover it with old towels. I think DD pooped on hers when she was a few days old and I immediately realized it would not stay clean, so I keep the old towels in her dresser so we can change them out--which we do a few times a week! I like having the changing cover purely for asthetic reasons, but you definitely do NOT need one and it won't stay clean!!
  • I have one changing pad cover. We use it, but the couple times he has made a mess on it I haven't rushed to get it washed. The vinyl wipes clean really well. I have some of the disposable changing pads too and I keep them in the diaper bag. I also keep one on the changer in the PNP because the vinyl does get very cold.
