Green watery stool in 3week old?

LO is EBF, and the past few days we've noticed several green seedy stools instead of yellow. I called the pedi and they said an occasional green stool is normal and most likely is related to my pnv or diet. I skipped taking my pnv yesterday and still noticed some green stools in the evening. I didn't eat broccolli yesterday so I don't know why her stools would be so green. Could it be a sign of illness? Once website I read said it could be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, but that it's rare.

Do you notice green stools in your less than a month old BF infant?

  • Ds had green stools, but his were because he was jaundiced.  I'm guessing that's not the case for you, or you would have known it before.  I've heard about the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance-maybe try feeding longer on the first side and see what happens?

  • She was jaundiced, but the doctor said she's cleared. Would she still have them at this point from jaundice?

  • DS had a few days w/ green/watery stools when he had an eye infection.  I'm not sure if it had anything to do w/ the eye infection but his stools did return to normal after a few days when his infection cleared.  I would watch it for a few days and see if it returns to normal, it may just be random especially if your LO is not having any syptoms of illness, etc.

DD normally has one green poop a day.  I have no idea why--maybe it's something I eat, or maybe for the preceding feeding she's not getting enough hindmilk.  But since it's every day like clockwork and then it goes back to being mustardy, I assume she's fine.

  • My LO has a couple of green poops each day, and the pedi said it's fine (as long as it's not super watery, black or red, or associated with other symptoms) and probably related to my diet. I'm so used to it, it's almost surprising when he has a yellow poop! I have heard of the lack of hindmilk issue, and I believe this is also associated with foamy stools?
  • My LO had about a week of grass green poops.  This coincided with his spurt of evening cluster feeds when he was around 2 weeks old, so I assumed it was due to him not getting enough hindmilk.  I started block feeding, and it didn't make any difference---poop still bright green.  I asked the pedi about it, and she said occasional green poops are normal, but if it's more than occasionally, it could indicate a very minor intestinal virus, even though he wasn't showing any symptoms of being sick.
  • For my LO, this was the first sign of dairy intolerance, but I would suggest waiting and seeing.  If it doesn't keep up for weeks, it is nothing to worry about.
