Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you feel confident..

..to NIP? Right now it feels like such an ordeal that I'll never be able to go anywhere because she might get hungry lol...

Re: When did you feel confident..

  • I still plan my outings around feedings, or nurse in my car. I did once in the Macy's restroom where they have the couches, and that was fine. But really, DS is a noisy eater, so I'm opting against?doing it?really OUT in public.

  • prob around 3 mos. i use a bebe au lait, but sometimes i just whip it out, i dont care
  • it gets easier once they start taking in more, they nurse for shorter periods of time.  plus timing it right i can go 3-4 hours between feedings.  for me though it was around 6 weeks that i felt confident to NIP.  maybe try pumping before you go.

  • P.S. We didn't take DS anywhere enclosed for the first month, so that gave us time to get the hang of things.

  • My advice for this is to make plans with one of your mommy friends.  You'll feel more confident doing something with someone who has been in your place.  Then the next time you want to do something you'll have the confidence to do it on your own!
  • Probably about 6 weeks...just b/c I had supply issues and often nursing didn't satisfy him so I had to nurse and then do the tricky figuring out how much he is going to eat in a bottle and then try to bottle feed him...practice with whatever cover you're going to use-I never got the hang of mine, so I just tuck a receiving blanket in my bra strap and let it drape over us.  I NIP all the time now and am totally comfortable.  Could you maybe pump and bottle feed?  Also...when I'm out, it's often much easier for me to nurse in my car-it's not ideal, but I don't worry about covering up or anything.

  • i got a hooter hider and did it on my first outing to the peds office (1 wk). once there, then once at a restaurant.  it wasn't too bad, but i recommend practicin with the cover at home.

  • lately i really won't go out without a bottle of BM with me. sometimes it just isn't possible to whip it out everywhere, though i have done it a couple of times. i'm usually so shy and tense when i do it that LO notices and gets wicked cranky about it. so i bring a massive bottle of BM that can definitely fill him up and i feel a lot better about doing that rather than having to worry where i can sit comfortably and quietly somewhere and feed him. though i live in a busy city area so it's a lot trickier--if i drove around i'd just nurse in the car.
  • I hear you!!!!  When i know we will be out during a feeding, i try to pump a bottle b/c nursing is still an ordeal.  LO nurses very well but it is still a juggling act that requires both my hands, and he is squirmy, and he doesnt like having his face covered so modesty seems next to impossible.

I know it gets better....I know moms that can stand in the back of a room and you would never know they were bfing...I hope to get there soon!

  • Right away. He was about 1w when we returned to  our normal shopping day routine. I ended up nursing him in Safeway, Trader Joes, and Target.

ETA: I do use a cover.

  • I still don't.  I haven't mastered the whole latching without flashing nipple yet.  I nursed in the car yesterday.  And I'm ok nursing in front of family and friends.  But I haven't attempted in public yet.

  • I had to while waiting for labwork when DD was a week old (jaundice).  I just stood in a corner and turned my back to the room.  I figured a nursing mom was less offensive than a screaming baby.

I'm still pretty self-conscious about it.  It's too hot to use a cover, so I just leave the AC running and BF in the car.

  • Right from the beginning. In restaurants, in stores, in my car, etc. When baby is hungry, baby is hungry.

Of course I used a nursing cover.

  • When LO is hungry I try my best to hide my bewbs with a blanket, but honestly when he is hungry my mind focuses on him so if someone see's a bewb I don't care.

  • I know the feeling, I was pretty overwhelmed the first couple of times going out.  So I timed everything and always made sure I had a bottle with.  I just ordered a hooter hider, so I going to practice with that at home.  I have also come out of stores to nurse in the car.  When he's hungry he's hungry.  Using the hooter hider cover up I'm sure I will get more comfortable soon.
  • I did it right away with a blanket covering me up. The first time was at 5 days old at my pedi office, we've also had to do it at the mall around 10 days old getting pictures taken. We use a nipple shield to nurse, so it gets a little tricky, but I do what I gotta do to feed the little man.
  • Still waiting... he started to fuss as we were leaving the doctor's office today and I almost had to nurse in the car.  But luckily he quieted down enough until we got home.
  • I have had to NIP a few times now.Its not as bad as you might think, especially if you have a cover.

  • First time was when he was only 2 weeks old. I ordered a really pretty nursing cover off etsy so I was excited to use it (yes, I am a dork). As long as I have the cover I can do it anywhere. Thank goodness for Macy's lounge though!
