Question for you working moms (re:reduced hours)

I am hoping to have a 4 - day work week approved after the return from Maternity leave (of course, with a 20% reduction in salary).

If you have done this, or know someone who has, when & how did you request this?  Was it accepted?  Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

  • I requested to reduce my hours from 40 to 30 once I had the baby. At my company it was no big deal, but I work for a very small company, so it might be different at a bigger company. I asked when I told them I was pregnant, but I think I could have asked afterwards and it would have been OK also. I'm not sure what advice to give - I just went in and asked. I was nervous about it, but I just did it.

  • I cut my hours to 32 as well.  I talked to my supervisor about it many times while I was still pregnant and my request was approved while I was on leave.

  • I asked when I was about 6 mos preg.  I also work for a smaller company so it was no big deal and I am still "on call" when I am home.

  • I reduced my week to 4 9 hour days.  I talked to my boss about while I was pg and they approved it while I was on leave.  I also work for a small company so that did help.  Also on my day off I still take some calls and check my email from home.

So, if they didn't approve it until you were on leave, then how did you schedule daycare?  The daycare I will place my LO in is now booking for June - which means family will have to watch him/her for a whole month as it is...  How did you plan that if they didn't approve you till mat leave?

Marnie, I just noticed your full-term loss in your siggy.  I'm so sorry.

A coworker of mine requested reduced hours while she was on maternity leave because her husband was going to have to work out of town for four days a week for over a year.  She talked to our HR partner, explained the situation, and was reduced to 32 hours a week.  He never ended up working out of town, but she is still on reduced hours.  I'm toying with the idea of asking for reduced hours myself because there is no necessity for her hours to be reduced anymore and they can't reasonably deny me a reduced work week if they allow her to have one.  I will let you know how that works out for me.  Big Smile

    I HAVE CHILDREN.
