Do I just give up????

I'm so frustrated with diaper rash! DD has been battling it for weeks now.I put her in sposies, stripped her diapers with blue Dawn, got her back into  the cloth and yet the rash still persisted. We've been to the pedi and it's not yeast. So she spent the next  2 weeks in sposies with lots of diaper rash cream and it finally cleared up. Yesterday her bum looked great! So, back into cloth we go. Last night I noticed she was starting to get red again. This morning..bright red! So I gathered up my stash and am stripping them again.

I don't know what to do! I normally wash them in CC. I didn't think that was the problem b/c I wash her clothes in it too and she hasn't had any other contact rashed. We've tried flushable liners with rash cream. She has a variety of pockets and it's not just one type that bothering her. (I need to stick with pockets b/c of daycare.)

What else can I do? I really really really do not want to quit cloth diapering, but I don't know what else to do!

Please help a lurker/occasional poster! I've learned so much from you ladies, but really need some help with this one!

Re: Do I just give up????

  • If the liner is a problem, try laying a piece of flannel or something in the diaper.

Also, it could be the detergent.  Even though it doesn't bother her anywhere else, adding moisture, especially pee, is a much different reaction.  That area is sensitive anyhow :

I hope you can figure it out :(

Maybe they need rinsed more.  :

  • I went through this with DS. He had diaper rash that was to the point where it had a few open soars actually. Like I'd have to pull the poo of his bum and it would pull skin off. The lady who watches him down the street said the same thing happened with her kid and it was raisins that made it so bad.

Anyway, I honestly have no suggestion b/c I honestly think DS just outgrow it. I tried everything, dtripping, back and forth from cloth to sposies, naked time, changing diaper every hour so he stayed as dry as possible, nothing seemed to be working. I just rolled with it and soaked his bum in the tub a lot since he was in so much pain, and all of a sudden, it just started getting better. Since then he hasn't really had much diaper rash at all....

  • I would still say it's the detergent.  I washed our clothes in CC as well as the diapers and DS only got a rash in his diaper area.  As soon as I switched detergents it stopped.  I think it's a combo of the detergent & the enclosed, moist area.

Would it be horrible to try out some Tide that I have in the house or would you  suggest something else?

  • Ditto everyone on the possibility of it still being the detergent.  Beyond the moisture issue, if you're using different scents there could be something in the diaper version that's irritating to your DD.  I would strip, switch detergents, and see if it helps.

Have you been battling this consistantly with cloth?  Or is this something new?  Some babies are also sensitive to the inners of certain types of diapers so if it's a constant thing it could be that.

DD got a rash from Planet detergent. I switched to Tide and voila! No rash. Definitely give it a try.

After I did the Blue Dawn strip, her skin had a terrible red reaction. I realized that not all of the Dawn was out, so I used RLR and that did wonders to remove everything.

I did exactly that!  I had a tiny box of Tide that came with our washer so I used that until I could find something else.
  • I use northern essence diaper rash salve for sensitive skin with almost every diaper change as a rash preventative. DD would get pretty red before we started using it, and if I start to slack she starts to get red again. She doesn't get any rash when we use it consistently.

I wouldnt think you'd need to do that if there was an underlying reason why you're getting a red bum.  I thought it was just a fact of life for DS so I used cream a lot but since switching detergents I've used cream maybe twice.
  • Thanks ladies! I'll try switching detergents and see how it goes. I really want DD in her cute cds!
