Prenatal Massage, worth it?

I loved getting massages pre pregnancy, but I am wondering how relaxing they would be while pregnant.  I am assuming they have a different way to massage our backs since we can't lay on our stomachs.

Is it easy to relax during one? Is an hour too long, should I do a half hour? Thanks!

Re: Prenatal Massage, worth it?

  • They are very worth it!! Try to find a place that has a maternity table so you can lay on your stomach. My chiro doesn't have a maternity table and they have me lay on my side, it is really comfortable, and I absolutely love it.

  • I've had 2, one at 15 weeks and one at 26 weeks.  I was able to put a bolster pillow under my boobs, at the very top of my belly and it propted me up enough to be able to lay on my stomach and still be comfortable.  I know that some places have you lay on your side and I don't think that would be as comfortable.  Other places have a special table that has a hole in it so that you can lay on your stomach.  I would call around and see if they have the open table if you have a bigger belly....
  • Completely worth every penny!  I actually stopped having sciatic nerve pain after mine!

  • I have had one every week since 32 weeks...I find it helps moves the blood around - as my legs carry the most of the problems - not my lower back - I go for an hour and although sometimes certain areas hurt - not soo relaxing I feel better up until the next one. I have been suffering from really bad leg cramps and regardless what I did it didn;t help - the massages do..hope this helps :)
  • I had one in April for my birthday. I guess I was around 22 weeks along... but I had enough of a belly to need the maternity pillow they use. It was wonderful. If my medical expenses had been less, I'd have scheduled one for now.

Go for it! Just make sure that the massage therapist is certified in prenatal massage as well. There are certain pressure points that should NOT be massaged as they can (although rarely) cause uterine contractions/preterm labor.
