I had my heart set...

I had my heart set on BG 3.0 as my exclusive diaper since it seems to get great reviews, fits well, and it can be worn from tiny to toddler. Well I just read that they are very bulky on newborns until about 3 months and it's best to go with a different option when they're tiny. Most people seem to say they use PF with a cover, but I really don't want to do that.

What did you use on LO until about 3 months? Did any of you use BG 3.0 on newborns?

TIA!!

Re: I had my heart set...

  • Not just bulky but usually gape a bit at the legs b/c newborn legs are so skinny so you'll have leakage.

We used newborn prefolds from GMD and thirsties covers.  Cheap and easy because they go through so many so quickly.  I think we had one kl0.

  • I think you'll find that prefolds and covers are a lot easier and less maintenance than pockets.

    1) You can trifold a prefold in a cover and it goes on the baby JUST like a pocket. (Not to mention that it's cheaper)

    2) You don't have to stuff the diaper (Stuffing = PITA!!!)

    3) You don't have to worry about the prefold repelling and therefore soaking your baby, you, or your baby's crib sheets.

    4) You don't have to worry about complicated wash routines because the microsuece and microfiber hold stink like nobody's business.

    Here's my recommendation -

GMD orange edge or yellow edge prefolds + PUL covers. (Check out Thirsties Duos & Litewraps)

Or, if your'e dead set against prefolds (but honestly - they're really not bad at all - they're my favorite now after trying pretty much everything) check out GroBaby. These seem to actually fit newborns pretty well and you don't have to worry about all of the problems with synthetic fabrics.

  • We used BG 3.0s from about 1 month on. ?My DD was a chunker so her thighs were big enough to eliminate any gaping. ?I won't lie, she had a big butt for about 6 months. ?We did a lot of onsies w/ skirts or dresses because pants looked funky.

But, BG3.0's are very convenient, daddy-friendly diapers. ?I use them now when we go out and about because they're so easy to change. ?Around the house we use snugglebottoms (www.babybunz.com) which are a cross between a fitted and a prefold.

  • We use prefolds and I love them. I also made them DH friendly by sewing velcro onto them so he wouldn't have to mess with pins. I'm so glad I did that, it makes changing her so much easier and faster.

  • Hmmmm.....

So lets just say that I was possibly maybe contemplating trying out prefolds. What kind do you use? What covers? I've seen fleece and PUL. I am completely lost now.  Oh boy....I feel like I'm an easy convert, but it does sound good...oi

GMD Organics are by far my favorite prefolds. The sizing is different than any other brand and it makes them easier to use.

As for covers, I would stick with PUL for the newborn stage since they poop so much (and since it's so runny). This will be the easiest for maintanence. Check out Thirsties Duos (great for tri-folding, and they grow with baby), Booroi covers (made for tri-folding), Litewraps, ImseVimse, Blueberry covers, and any others (there are lots that I haven't tried or aren't thinking of at the moment). Look at their reviews and then maybe get a few to try.

  • We used prefolds and covers until pockets would fit. I have to tell you, I really thought it was going to be a huge PITA, but just what we would have to do to get to pockets.

In the end, I ended up really liking prefolds. They are easy once you get the hang of folding, and they just WORK. They are super low maintenance. DD could fit in to pockets starting at about 8 weeks, and well after that, even my husband still grabbed the prefolds first.

Also, we have never had a poopsplosion with prefolds. Never, not once.

    Good luck!

  • I thought I would prefer fitteds, but I loved prefolds, too, and now I only use flats!
