Babies: 9 - 12 Months

layette help from experienced mommies?

Hi ladies!  Since you're all already dealing with rapidly growing babies and I have zero experience with them, I figured I'd ask for some help.  I'm still trying to sort thru stuff I got at my shower, at sales, as handmedowns etc and figure out what I actually still need.

I have a feeling I have too much in small sizes, as I can't imagine she will be in those for very long (although I do realize all babies are different).

Any advice on 'holes' in this layette?  I have tags/receipts for almost everything so am thinking about exchanging for some larger-sized clothing.   Just need to know some realistic guidelines on what real moms actually used!! Smile

So far I have (and i do realize that each brand is different on size too):

NB - 5 footed sleepers, 9 onesies, 3 tshirts

0-3 mos - 12 onesies, 2 tshirts, 6 sleepsack/gowns, 2 footed sleepers

3 mos - 5 onesies, 2 sweaters, 2 pants, 1 gown

0-6 mos - 2 gowns

3-6 mos - 7 onesies, 2 sweaters, 2 pants, 3 footed sleepers

6mos - 2 pants sets, 2 tshirts, 4 onesies, 4 footed sleepers

9 mos - 1 dress, 1 onesie, 1 sleeper

12 mos - 13 onesies

18 mos - 2 onesies

I have hats/socks/mittens etc but was more concerned with the actual clothing - the left side (small side) of her closet looks CRAZY.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Re: layette help from experienced mommies?

  • For the first 2 months, DS lived in gowns.  I had a few footed sleepers, but mainly gowns.  I'd say 10+.  I see no reason to have t-shirts for a NB, but that's just me.  The hospital will probably give you a few kimono style ones, but I don't know that I ever put those back on DS.

He only stayed in 0-3 month clothing for 2 months.  Then, 3-6 month for about 2 months.  He's now (at 7 months) mainly in 9 or 12 month clothing.  Therefore, I wouldn't really worry about real outfits past about 6 month size at this point, because you don't really know what season it will be when your LO is wearing that size.  For instance, I have a cute Jon Jon I bought for DS in a 12 month size, that has my college's logo on it.  I thought it would be great for football season.  Yeah, he wore it today and it's basically too small already.

I hope this is somewhat helpful, GL!

  • For the firstfew months of his life, Adam lived in onesies because he was swaddles costantly. He didn't wear footed sleepers until 4 or 5 months.

    Every baby is different though!

that's very helpful, thanks!  although the season thing isn't a huge concern here - i'm in Arizona and we basically have just warm/hot...LOL.

Every baby is totally different.  DS wore footed sleepers for the first 4 months of his life and six of those weeks were size NB.  He still sleeps in them.  He didn't start wearing onsies until the summer.  The neck holes on gowns were so big I couldn't use them until he was 3 months and then it was too warm anyway.

I say leave the tags on everything and see what happens.  Our plan worked really well.  I had two piles, with tags, waiting at home.  One was NB and one was 0-3 months.  They had several gowns (sizeless), about 6 footed sleepers, and 6 onsies per size.  Once the baby was born and we knew his size, we washed the appropriate pile.  That turned out to be NB for us.  We held onto the 0-3 until he got there.  Had he fit immediately into them, we would have returned NB.  We ended up buying more footed sleepers because they worked best for us.  I don't really advise planning too far ahead.  You will learn in the first few months what works for you and then you can watch sales on that stuff rather than ending up with tons of something that just didn't work for you.

thanks ladies, that all was really helpful!  Think i'll stick with what i've got, maybe return a few of the nb items because i really doubt i'll need that many, and use the credit to buy stuff like burp cloths i still need Smile
