Help me make a travel decision!

We are on vacation and have been talking about taking the train into Chicago, which is about a hour and a half from here. The problem is that the train departs at about 8:30 in the morning and doesn't leave Chicago until about 5. That means DD would only be able to nap in her stroller tomorrow, and she is a finicky sleeper. I/we want to go so much, but I just don't know if we should chance it and have a cranky baby on our hands. Any ideas or personal experiences with something like this?

Re: Help me make a travel decision!

  • Just curious where you are vacationing. We just got back from Saugatuck/St.Joseph michigan area which is 1.5 hrs from chicago too.

Anyway to answer your question, I wouldn't go into chicago personally. DH LOVES chicago, but I refuse to go with litte kids b/c it would be such a pain getting on and off public transit, having the kids miss their nap and throwing tantrums, not being able to actually enjoy good food b/c DS is done with his after 10 minutes and is crawling on the table....

I'd just wait and make it a litte getaway trip for you and DH. We went last July for a three day weekend w/o DS and while we missed him, it was wonderful to get away and see the city

  • We're very close to Saugatuck!  It's a small little beach town called New Buffalo.  Thanks for your perspective on the travel.  As much as I want to go I just don't know if I can do it to DD :o(

  • I'd do it and suffer any consequences, but I'm crazy like that.

I think this is what I'd do too but I have a younger child so I'm not sure my opinion counts for much :)
  • If you are planning on taking the amtrak, plan on it taking much longer than it says, and stopping frequently.  Every person I know who takes the train to chicago ends up late.  It took my mom 5 hours to get from indy to chicago (a 3 hour car trip).  So keep this in mind if you decide to go!
