2nd Trimester

Let's add another Dr., shall we?

After putting it off for two weeks, I finally made an appoitment with the neurologist that my OB referred me to.  I've had extremely bad numbness and even pain in my hands for the past eight weeks or so.  (I had numbness off and on in my hands before my BFP.  I was always told it was due to diabetic neuropathy.....now the doctors are leaning toward carpal tunnel.)  I have braces for both hands that I wear when I need to but the pain is getting consistently worse.  I'm hoping that this doctor can do something for me.  Both my endocrinologist and my OB can't seem to do anything for me and don't have anything to suggest except for the braces.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has had problems with this during pregnancy.  I've read that carpal tunnel can become worse during pregnancy.  I'm just having a bit of a hard time because it makes it hard to do simple things such as write grocery lists or do my hair all at once.  (I have to take 2-3 breaks when just putting my hair in a pony tail because my hands go numb.)  Any suggestions or things that have worked for other ladies?  Thanks in advance!!

  • I'm thinking spine and massive nerve pinching. My aunt just had surgery for this but she is like 50.

  • Hello, there! Kinda glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. Been diagnosed Type II for about 6 years (insulin dependent), and have always had some numbness here and there. But, now when I'm asleep at night, if my hands are even a little above my heart they go completely numb and cold!!! I have to make sure they're below my heart.

When I mentioned this to doc, she said it could be worsening diabetic neuropathy (except my A1C is freakin perfect for the first time EVER, so it would be weird that it's getting worse now), or carpal tunnel. She said just what you said...some pregnant women get carpal tunnel or it gets worse w/ pregnancy. Said it would go away if that's what it was. Weird!

I have been having another issue, wonder if you have or anyone else??? My right hip goes numb if I lay on my left side for long (which I've tried to do when sleeping b/c they say it helps blood flow to placenta). Know anything about that????

  • I actually had really bad?tingling?in my right hand today. ?There was no numbness but I did start to freak out. ?I?laid?down for a little bit and it subsided. ?I didn't even think about diabetic neuropathy, but I bet that's what it was. ?Either that or carpel tunnel, but it was more of a?tingle?than a pain.

I have to have my hands below my heart at night as well and half the time I am wearing my braces to bed....so uncomfortable!  My A1C, according to my dr's, is excellent (5.3) so I've put diabetic neuropathy out of my mind.  I'm just looking for some kind of relief!  I am not able to close either of my hands fully in the morning when I wake up b/c of the pain.

As you said though, it is good to know that I'm not the only one....even moreso that I'm not just imagining things!

I haven't had any problems with numbness elsewhere though.  The whole thing with your hip sounds aweful!  Best of luck to you!!

  • my friend had this during the end of her pregnancy and then when the baby was born. after nursing they were able to put her on more meds. but she had to be very very careful. she almost dropped the baby several times. her husband stays next to her when she walks and otherwise the baby is held while sitting . it was very scary but they couldn't do anything until the baby was born
