Pregnant after a Loss

Weight gain ... or lack there of

Has anyone else had a hard time gaining weight? I'm 18 weeks 3 days and have only gained 4 pounds. My doctor isn't too worried yet but wants me to take in at least another 200 calories a day and I'm having a hard enough time eating as much as I am (which apparently isn't much). Based on my height and weight pre-pregnancy I should gain about 30 pounds. What have  you guys done to gain weight? Any foods you'd recommend? Thanks!

  • Child, I am 24 (almost) and have gained 1. My docotr said she os not concerned as long as I eat healthy so I wouldn't worry. Remember, the more you put on, it may be hard to get off, so I'm not complaining!!!! :)

  • I am still really early, so I know it may not be out of the ordinary for me to not have gained any weight yet, but I have been wondering the same thing. I guess I am mainly surprised because I gain weight easily otherwise. I am someone who has to be conscientious and workout to not put on weight regularly, but so far I have not gained a pound. I wish I could say the same for how I LOOK because I definitely look like I have. I was going to give myself another three weeks before becoming really worried. So...that probably doesn't help you a whole lot, but...

If I was trying to gain weight with healthier options I would:

    - Try to incorporate healthy fats like nuts, avocados, peanut butter, cheese, etc. into my diet as much as possible.

    - Try bagels with full-fat cream cheese or butter and bread with dinner

    - Full fat dressings on salads or veggies

    -  Throw some extra carbs in there like mashed potatoes or pasta as a side with something more balanced like grilled/roasted chicken

    I hope this helps some!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm not worried yet, my doctor would tell me if I should worry, I just want to try and get more food in each day so I don't have to worry later on you know?  I was thinking about nuts, I think I'm going to buy some trailmix and keep some at work and some at home, that might help.  I appreciate the suggestions!
  • I think I gained about 5 pounds in the first 20 weeks. ?Like you, I was thin to start. ?My doctor wasn't concerned, and my weight gain picked up in the second half of the pregnancy. ?I think I gained a total of 33 pounds.

Just make sure you're eating throughout the day. ?Maybe give yourself a daily treat to get some extra calories.

I also made sure to stop the low cal eating I was used to - e.g. nonfat lattes, no cheese on my sandwiches, etc.?

  • I'm just eating twice as many fruits and veggies as usual.  That way my extra calories are healthy and I just love fruit anyway.  I also eat plenty of ice cream and pototo chips...oh wait that's probably not good....maybe don't do that Wink

  • I was in the same situation as you -- around 4 lbs weight gain at 17w. Since then, I've gotten a lot hungrier and have 1 or 2 snacks in between meals now (apples with sunbutter is a favorite). Gaining weight seems to be no issue now!
