Baby Names

Bentley?

I was wathching 16 and Pregnant and the girl named her son Bentley.  I believe they are calling him Ben.

Thoughts?

I think it's kinda cute!

Re: Bentley?

  • I wouldn't do it, but I think it is cute.  I guess if you were going to call him Ben it wouldn't be so bad.

  • Someone on this board mentioned it a few days ago. a Bently is a CAR!
  • It's not a horrible name, but I think that it's pretty low-brow to name your child after a luxury automobile

  • On the show they always call him Bentley. I don't like it at all.
    Blank!
  • Bentley is awful.
  • Personally I like the name.  To me it is no different than naming your child after a season (Summer) or a month (April) or a seasoning (Basil).

  • Trashy... screams trailer park to me.

Honestly, is Basil really a common name? Like April?

i don't think they go in the same catagory. Summer is pretty, warm, fun...April is the begining of spring...Basil smells good...lol

I agree that Basil is really not that common, though I have seen it listed as a more unique name .... it is completely not nms, LOL!!

I'm quite sure that Basil is a name, and the meaning doesn't even relate to spiaces St. Basil is pretty old, from the 4th century. Not quite the same as Autumn or Summer IMO.

And no, it's not the same to name your kid after a car as it is to name your kid after a month or a plant. It's really trashy, which is why you see it on 16 and pregnant.

As a name it's pronounce Baz-ill - and it's common in England. It's John's Cleese's name on Fawlty Towers. Great show.

Bentley, however, is what you name your child when you wish you were patrician...But You Just Aren't.

  • I have known a dog or two named that but not a person. I work in the Vet Industry and I think it's cute for an animal but so much for a baby.

Hmm, I wouldn't say it was common in England, I have never met anyone with that name and just asked my dh, who was born and raised there and he said he doesn't know any either. It may be from that show but I wouldn't say it was common there!

A nice chunk of metal.  DH and I like this name.

  • I love the name Bentley, it is a middle name I had picked out, but my DH hates it so we won't be using it.

Basil is a name.  In addition to the British TV show tie that one PP mentioned, it's a name that you see more often in Eastern European cultures.  The English equivalent of Vasiliy is Basil.  But the name is not because of the spice at all.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_(name)

Also, re: the name Mercedes -- in Spanish this name is pronounced Mehr-seh-des (not Mur-say-dees, like we usually pronounce the car name), and it means "mercies."  It's a fine Spanish name, related to a title for the Virgin Mary, and it was a woman with this name that actually inspired the name of the car line.

Bentley, however, isn't a longstanding name that existed before the luxury car line, as far as I am aware.

  • Personally, I hate it.  It's a type of car in my mind...not the name for a person.
  • I think it sounds trashy. Just my immediate reaction.
  • Its my dogs name...so thats all I can think of it as! :/
  • Bentley is horrible; I'm not going to sugar coat it.

Basil is *NOT* a common name in the UK.  I live in the UK and just checked the England/Wales census records and it has not been in the Top 100 for the past 6 years.

I've checked Scotland as well and it is not there.  So unless there are tons of Basil's hopping around Northern Ireland, you are incorrect.

    Twins!  Rolls and Royce!

I think that Bentley is trashy, and since we're on the subject, think that month and season names (Autumn, Summer, April) are stripper names.

  • I kinda like it. It is different. I say go for it and dont care/worry about what anyone else thinks. Not everybody will like the name you choose. Just like you or I may not like the name the choose. I liked the name Anniston but changed my girls name because people thought it was awlful. I didn't think it was bad and now there is someone in my town that named their girl that name. Now I wish I didn't let other people decide for me.

I say go for it :)

  • Read Freakonomics and you will understand why this isn't an acceptable name for your child.
