Adoption

Anyone watching HawthoRNe? ETA: AR spoilers

One of the storylines is about adoption.  Based on the look Hawthorne gave when the adoptive parents showed up in L&D, I'm not holding my breath for a positive portrayal of adoption.

Oh, and now another set of adoptive parents has shown up.  Awesome.Tongue Tied

  • It's amazing to me the things that I didn't notice about TV until I started considering adoption.

  • I love this show, and I didn't watch the episode yet. I will try to later today and respond later. Last week's episode seemed odd with the way the foster situation went down.

  • I haven't watched yet -- I'll let Honeydew be the guinea pig.  :)
  • Well...I still like the show, BUT I dislike the situation they portrayed. If anything, I think it paints BMs in a very negative light when I imagine very few BMs are like this one. Thoughts?

  • Umm, I just watched that episode last night. The writers actually wrote it very well as far as how the hospital would handle that situation.

As a BM, here are my thoughts:

    1. Until the BM gives consent, adoptive parents do not have rights to the baby. It is also up to the person in labor & the medical staff who is allowed in the room during the birth. So by not allowing them in the room, that was done according to 90% of all hospital protocol. I hate to be brutal, but that is how it goes.

    2. I do agree that that story did paint BMs as horrible, coniving people. I would have never dreamed of doing that to anyone. Unfortunately, there are those few that do it.

    3. When I was giving birth, all we had to say was "This is an adoption plan." At that point, all questions were asked directly to me or my counselor. No one was allowed in the room without either of our consents and every doctor, nurse, etc was prepared to direct everything to me. They were very well trained, and prepared for any choices I made, but at the same time the situation was handled professionally too. Does all that make sense?

  • Thanks Hershey. I was hoping a BM would share her thoughts. I know some ppl are out for the $, but I really believe they are in the minority. I did feel awful for the ppl who thought they were receiving their bab. While a bit contrived, I thought it was a nice twist that the dad and his parents were taking the baby. We talk a lot about BMs but not much about BFs; sometimes it seems that they are a missing part of the equation?

  • I think I went on the defensive a bit in the very beginning, but ultimately I  was impressed by the way the nurse handled things (this was only my second time watching the show).  I did wish that the BM wasn't portrayed as such an immature conniver.  I think it plays into some of the stereotypes that some people have about adoption.  But then again, TV often plays into common stereotypes, doesn't it?
  • I was disappointed in the show all around
