Laptop on belly?

Hey everyone,

?? ?I've had a laptop for a bit over a year and lately I've been realizing that when I use it on the couch, I hold it very close to my belly. Do you think this is harmful? I'm sure the computer gives off some type of electricity/electro magnetic activity and I'm all of a sudden curious if anyone has read or heard of a hazard from this. I've been keeping it farther away from the bump. ?Just curious:) I love my computer....but I love my baby more!?

I usually put a pillow under the laptop.

I sit cross-legged with my laptop on my legs, touching my belly a bit. I don't put the weight of the laptop on my belly.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I do find that I get cramped easily! haha

    ?

I would love to hear if it was harmful though... but I don't see how it is much different than using your cellphone or a microwave??

  • I actually called my OBs office about this when I was around 6w.  They said they would be more concerned about the heat that the laptop gives off than anything else, but that I should just keep it off my belly and not worry about it.  I think they thought I was being pretty paranoid.

  • I worry about the heat from mine all the time... I started putting a pillow under it.

  • There is actually info about this online. They say the electro-whatevers are not enough to hurt the baby, but the HEAT is a problem. I put a pillow or blanket on my belly and try to keep the LT on my lap, more than my stomach. LO kicks the LT anyway, so it's impossible for me to type with it on there. lol
  • I'm not too concerned with the aspect of the laptop giving off some sort of an electromagnetic energy as I am with the heat.  My laptop gives off a huge amount of heat, so I try to keep it off my belly just so it doesn't overheat.
    ...
  • There was an article a while ago (I think on Yahoo) about a connection between Laptops sitting directly on your legs/lap and cancer. I try to move it when it gets hot, and keep a pillow under it.

  • It's just one of those things that I know we won't know more effects about because we're one of the first generations that will deal with this problem. I'm doing the Pillow thing now and if there is a desk or a table I'll use that. I dont like to be too close to microwaves either...I'm probably paranoid!?
  • it typically sits on  my lap-close to belly.  i used one all of first pg at home while hanging on the couch-and no problems to date with my 2.5 year old!   there is probably a danger in everything who knows
  • It's better to be safe than sorry!

As other posters have said, I just put a pillow under it.

  • I got this laptop table for my lap a few months ago from staples. It is hard on top and it has a cushion underneath filled with the same things that go in bean bags. It works great and it very comfy. It is shaped to fit around your stomach and it comes with a handle. I paid around $40 for it.
  • You can get a laptop cooling pad. It plugs into the computer and it has two small fans that keep the laptop from overheating. It is really lifght weight and barely noticeable, but not soft on bottom. Not too expensive but better for the computer than a pillow! The laptop table that was posted earlier would also be a great idea!
  • I read somewhere, perhaps on here, that in parts of the world they believe that prolonged computer use can shift the gender of a fetus to a girl. So if you fear pink, apparently you should wear tinfoil over your bump.?

Other than that, I have heard of little else regarding issues during pregnancy. ?

  • I would suggest getting a portable laptop holder that has a fan in it! There pretty cheap and would be a lot better then a pillow or blanket because those will make you warmer just as fast if you ask me! A laptop generates lots of heat, especially when you have it on your lap because both your body and the laptop generate heat! My DH works it IT and has a cow if I don't use mine!
  • DH gets mad when he sees me without a pillow under it. So I do, for him!

  • Ditto about the pillow. I put my feet up, so the pillow and computer are on my thighs. I keep it away from the belly.
