TTC after 35

Do you have a cut off age?

I have two boys and thought that all I wanted was two children, but lately I'm thinking that I want a third. DH was set on two, but just the other day mentioned a third and said we could revisit the idea in the next year. I am 36 (37 in Sept) and always said that my cut off age was 36, but now I want to move it up. I had my yearly gyn appt yesterday and my doctor said I was fine and just to prepare for more testing. We never did the testing for either of our sons, I was pregnant w/ #1 at 33 & #2 at 35.

I'm thinking if we aren't pregnant by next Sept 2010 (38th bday) then we will be a family of 4.

Re: Do you have a cut off age?

  • Obviously since I'm 41 and trying for our first time to get pregnant, I don't have a cut off age. The age should be whatever you and your husband decided.

    Good luck

  • I hope this post doesn't come off as rude, that was never my intention.

I mean, originally I wanted to have my kids by the ripe old age of 30. Wink Of course, that didn't happen, so I kept moving it up and here I am again, moving it up. I guess as long as I (we) feel comfortable, mabye we won't have a cut off age.

  • We don't really have a cut off age, just a cut off number of kids of 2, especially since I'll be 40 in another year and DH will be 46 in November.

  • No, no cut off age.  I'm gonna be 36 in Oct and the hubs is 47.  I always wanted to be a mom so I'm not gonna stop til I am!  :)

  • No cut off age for us.  I'm 38 and DH is 37.  The thought of putting an end date on this would stress me out even more.  I figure we will try until it works, or until we reach a point where we no longer want to try.

  • I didnt find your post to be rude at all.  It is a thought-provoking question.
If I could have "planned" my life I would have married at 27, had baby 1 at 30, baby 2 at 32, and baby 3 at 34.  Sounds so easy, doesnt it.  But I didnt meet my H until I was 36 and didnt get married until almost 39.

I havent really thought about a cut-off age.  I hope Im not too close to that cut off.
It really is cruel that girls can get K/U at 12 and it is so much harder to get K/U in your late thirties.

  • I don't have a cut off age (DH & I are both 38), but my RE seems to.  As good as my RE is, I'm getting a little tired of being told that I'm old!  That being said, I know a lot of people who have gotten K/U in their late 30s and early 40s.  I think that you're better prepared as parents when you're older.  Unfortunately, evolutionary biology just hasn't caught up to the modern philosophy!

  • Now that we've had troubles with ttc #2, I have decided that I don't want to be pregnant after 39.  Our first child was born when I was 35 and dh was 40. Both dh and I also have some health issues that need to be taken into consideration as well.  I've been struggling with this dilemma for a few months now and it's driving me insane.
  • Right now I want to keep trying until I have two!  I guess I might change my mind once I get one at the age of 40. :)
  • Nope, no cut off...  I didn't meet my DH till a month after my 39th birthday.  Married last October.  Now I'm 41, but we are still trying.

Ain't that the truth!  So now we have to endure shows like "16 and Pregnant".  Uggh.

My cut off was to be pregnant by 40 but now we are considering DE so it will probably be pg by 41. We will probably not move forward any later than that (I am 6 mos shy of 40).

  • Some doctors do have cut off.  I think that is the norm.  There was a story recently about the woman who gave birth to twins at 66 and died at 69.  She lied and told the clinic she was younger - the clinic's cut off age was 55.

That being said, you have a long way until 55 Smile

I am 37 and just starting.  I always thought I would have my first by 30.  I always said I would do it with or without a man in my life.  Then I kept putting things off.  Went through a divorce and such.  And I am glad that I don't have a child with my ex.  Then I started a plan for me, which meant having a kid by 36.  Well, then I met this wonderful man who knew about my plan and asked for year - so that we could date and get to know one another.  I gave him the year and now we are married and trying for our family.  We actually dated back when we were in college, so I think it is a great story to share one day with our kids.

So, now we are trying to get pregnant.  As for how many kids, I don't know.  I want at least two.  But I have already determined that if we are not able to have children, we will adopt.  The most important part for me is that we have children, not particularly how we get them.

Sorry for being so long winded.

I'll be 41 soon and TTC#1 and yes, I did interpret your post as rude at first but I do appreciate your honestly and apology.

30 is not a ripe old age in my book.

DH and I do not have a cutoff date however we did briefly discuss adoption as an option if we are unable to conceive.

  • no i didnt find this post rude. this question has actually been asked before.

i'm 36 and dh is 37 and we are ttc#1 so i'm not sure if i have a cut off age.  if i had married earlier in life (we've only been married 18months and this is a first marriage for both of us) i probably would've said 35. but i'm 36 so go figure.

  • Hi there.

We don't have a cut off age.

For me, this isn't about age, per se - with all the options, sperm donors, egg donors, etc, women can have babies for a long, long time, even after menopause.

But I do think a time will come when, if we don't get our BFP, we just won't want to keep trying. We'll either run out of money, or emotional energy.

I would say the same thing if I were 25, though.

  • Our cutoff is more about the law of diminishing returns. For instance 3 IUIs and 2 IVFs will probably be it for us But heck I didn't thing that we'd get to that either so who knows.

No cutoff age for me. I'll keep trying until I run out of eggs or I'm emotionally done.

  • We don't have a "cut off age", but a cut off on finances.  We are 100% OOP and my 17 year old is going to college next year.  We can't really justify spending saved money for college on repeated IUIs or IVFs.  So, we are really hoping (as we all are) our next baby will take and stick.
