Need Advice: Rice Cereal

for the past couple of days we have been attempting to feed Hannie rice cereal.  i put about two teaspoons of cereal into a bowl and mix it with formula until it is an oatmeal consistency.  when i feed her i put her in her Sit & Grow.  she always wrinkles her nose at the cereal but does not turn away or cry or fuss.  she almost always gets more on her than in her mouth.

here is my question: at pedi's recommendation we started out with twice a day feedings.  since she doesn't seem all that interested should i cut down to only once a day?  or is her behavior at eating time normal?  also, should i be feeding her cereal after she has a bottle or during a bottle?

  • We haven't done solids, so I don't known about how many times a day or what is normal, but I think you feed solids after a bottle...??

  • My DS hates cereal but here is what we did/do.  I started with one meal a day.  We did dinner because I am the least rushed at that time.  I try to make sure that his meal is about an hour after his last bottle so he is not full.  And maybe try to change up the consistency a little to see if she likes it better.  Again this didn't help me any but it is worth a try.  At least she will let you put the spoon in her mouth.  DS closes his mouth and refuses to even try it.
  • We haven't started solids yet, but I worked with infants before I had DD and that reaction is completely normal. It is a new texture that she;s not used to, and it might take a little while for her to get used to it. I'd keep offering it twice a day, and she will get better with time. Once you start other solids you can mix the cereal with fruits or veggies and she might like it more. Solids should be offered after a bottle.

  • its too thick, make it a little thinner and then as she gets used to it thicken it up.

plus, some babies just hate rice cereal. all of mine did. either get the mixed cereal or go straight to bananas or something.

  • We've been doing solids before the bottle so she's not full and completely uninterested in the cereal.  We're only giving her a tiny bit so she still takes a full bottle after.  I'm not sure if this is right though...
  • ive read making it runnier might help.

from what I've read, that's normal. Some babies really don't like rice (doesn't taste) but like oatmeal. Maybe try that? Also, the consistency might be too much for her right now...more milk, less cereal might be easier.

  • doctors are funny, always something different.  we started at 4 months, once a day per their instruction, I up'd it to twice a day last week.  ds finally eat all of it with me on Sunday,  He eats it all at daycare everyday, home is another story
  • We actually started this weekend with cereal. DD didn't like the consistency of really thin.  So I thickened it up almost to a cream of wheat consistency and she liked it.  So far we are only giving her a tblspn a day.  Oh, she gets it 45 min after a bottle.  HTH
  • I'm right there with you.  We started Rice Cereal yesterday, we didn't get the crying but DS kept pushing it out of his month...not sure if he swallowed anything.  This is what my pedi said. 1 Tablespoon of cereal, with 3 Tablespoon of Formula.  We do cereal twice a day for breakfast and dinner.  After a month we can add veggies at lunch.  We do the cereal before the bottle so he is not full from the bottle.

  •  We just started yesterday. Pedi said feed solids 1-2 times a day until 7 months. I mixed the rice cereal with bm which makes it runny especially as it sits. DS loved it although it was a complete mess.
