So excited--Scott is on the growth charts for weight!

We went to the pedi this morning to get his iron rechecked since it was low at his one year check up and the MMR shot.  They weighed him and he's 19lbs, 3.5oz and for the first time is on the growth charts for weight.  YAY!!!!  He's between the 3rd and 5th percentile for weight and between the 10th and 20th percentile for length.  They didn't measure head circ this time since it wasn't an official check up appt but he was at the 95th or 97th percentile at his one year appt.  I'm just so excited he's on the charts for everything now--finally!

His iron is now within normal limits, although at the very low end of normal.  So we'll keep trying to get iron rich foods in him.  And he did great with the finger poke to get blood and the MMR shot.  We decided to get the MMR separately and at his 1 year adjusted age instead of at the 1 yr regular check up appt.  We gave him motrin before taking him in so hopefully he'll do OK.

But yay for Scott growing!  :)

  • yay for scott! henry's hanging onto the weight chart by a thread, but he's there.

anyway, i'm sure you know this, but just FYI, several things to help get more (absorbable) iron:

    1. cook non-animal-based high iron foods with animal foods. this helps the iron absorb better due to the easily absorbed heme iron in the animal product (it somehow helps with the bioavailability of the non-heme based iron). so beans cooked with beef in chili>beans.

    2. always always always give some source of vitamin c with high iron foods, and separate dairy by at least an hour or 2. mmm, broccoli and orange juice!

    3. cook in a cast iron skillet! especially liquidy/acidic things. it actually helps!

    4. things that are enriched with iron aren't the best sources. the absolute best iron is always from an animal product, so hopefully scott eats meat/eggs.

hope his iron stays normal, it's been a struggle for me my whole life, so i'm pretty anal about getting it in henry.

  • Also whatever u can mix rice cereal into will help cuz it has iron as well...we always mix it in Jack's Yogurt and the lil bit of purees we get him to eat. Good luck and I'm with u on the growth chart thing...Jack is right at the 5th percentile.

  • That's awesome!  Kira's around the 2nd-3rd %ile so I understand!  She was 19lb 4oz at her 18 month appt, so he got there before she did, but that's a boy/girl difference I think.  And Kira's got a big head too. ;)  A huge congratulations!  Keep it up, Scott!!! :)
