2nd Trimester

Weight gain, I got reprimanded

So I had my appointment yesterday and the doc said he was concerned that I hadn't gained any weight.  He said I really need to eat like 300 calories more than usual per day.  I was a little annoyed because I was under the impression that as long as the baby was growing fine there was no need to "eat for 2."  But I guess I was wrong.  So now I'm really making an effort, and I have a goal of 5 lbs before my next appointment in a month.

It doesn't help that this week I'm also having serious growing pains in my belly... my skin feels so stretched out and my belly button looks horizontal... so now that I am stuffing my face I feel like I'm making it hurt more.

If I were you I wouldn't worry about it.  I'd be grateful that I wasn't gaining a lot of weight.  It'll show up eventually.  As long as you aren't exercising all the time and starving yourself, who cares.  Eat when you're hungry and don't worry as long as the baby seems to be doing well.

  • Luckily my weight "situation" never got to the point where the doc said I had to start gaining, but at my 2nd appt (at about 14weeks) she said I hadn't gained any weight since the last month and had only gained a pound or two TOTAL.. and I was like "Ok, well clearly you're not seeing me struggle to get dressed, because I can wear NOTHING"...

Then this month I *suddenly* gained 6 pounds (a few of which I know were already there!!), lol... so this time she told me I was doing just fine.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as you're eating healthy, you're not having trouble keeping your food down, and you look like you're growing- then I'm sure for the time being, all is fine.

  • Thanks.  Yeah, I mean, this dude doctor is the only one that's said that to me.  Not that I have anything against male obgyns (well, maybe I do)... but my female doc had said to me that I do NOT need to eat for two, that she has had patients who actually lose 20 lbs with every pregnancy, and that everyone is different.  My sister also made me feel better my telling me that our mom didn't gain much weight at all either.
  • I sort of had the same thing happen at my last appointment (at 16 weeks, though).  My doctor wondered if I was feeling okay and eating okay since I had only gained one lb.  To be fair, according to my own scale at home, I've gained more than that.  I think their number gets a little off based on what I'm wearing that day to the appointment, etc.  Anyway, I feel like I've been eating SO much already, and it's hard to imagine eating more!  But, I'm trying...

I'd say add an extra glass of fruit juice to you day and you'll gradually start putting on weight.  My Dr had the same concern last appt.  I've lost 16 lbs and haven't gained any of it back.  His advice to me was to eat 6 to 8 small meals a day.  Try to increase calorie count where you can and just enjoy being pregnant.

  • eating an extra 300 calories per day is not "eating for two". you can get 300 extra calories by eating a yogurt & a piece of fruit. its really not that much. if you're not extra hungry, then i wouldnt worry about putting one xtra weight for the sake of it personally.
  • It's never fun to get reprimanded by your doc.  Just try to enjoy your pregnancy a little and have one extra snack a day.  That should add up.

I have a feeling I am going to get reprimanded by my doc today for the opposite weight problem.  Embarrassed

You don't have to stuff yourself. If you add few healthy but high fat snacks, like almonds, cheese, peanut butter, etc, you will get plenty of calories but not have to eat to the point of being uncomfortable.
  • Me too. Last night she tells my husband you can feed her. He just looked at her and said well she still is getting sick a few times a week so I am shocked she gained 2lbs. Not for nothing but I was so ill in 1st tri that I lost 25lbs (I could have afforded to lose 10 maybe 15 but 25 come on now) any gain even if only 2lbs or two days in a row of not puking my guts up is a huge win for me.
  • I didn't gain any weight ( I had serious food aversions and ended up losing weight) and my doctors never told me to eat more.  They had me do more ultrasounds to make sure the baby was growing and that's all.  My husband was a different story and he's been trying to throw food down my throat for two months!
  • Just eat a little bit more at different times of the day. That way you won't feel like you are stuffing yourself. Juice is good. Sometimes I treat myself with a glass of chocolate milk. Sometimes I get crispy chicken instead of grilled on my salad. It's super easy to add 300 or more?calories.
  • I had that issue my first trimester.  Doctor said to eat more protein.  Don't worry the weight does catch up to you and you'll gain 8lbs and not know where it came from!

  • At my last appt I lost weight and my dr told me I shouldn't be losing weight at this point but she was not worried because she knew I would gain it back. I wouldn't worry too much, but with that said I wouldn't ingore what your dr told you. I would try to fit more snacks into the day.
