How far apart are your appts. at 20+ weeks??

I read in a twin pregnancy book today that starting at 20 weeks, your doctor should be seeing you once every two weeks, and then once every week starting at 30 weeks.  Is this standard protocol?  No one seems to communicate with me at my OB's office (since I am yet to see the same person twice).  I just assumed I would make my next appointment for four weeks later (24 weeks).  Anyone have any insight??

Is it too late for me to change OB's....I haven't even met the actual doctor yet anyway......

  • If you're not comfortable with your doctor or his/her office then switch.  A multiples pregnancy is not your standard deal and you should feel 100% confident that your doctors have it under control.

I had more appointments than most because of cervical issues and I think I was every 2 weeks at that time with peri visits inbetween.  If I had had no complications my OB would have seen me every 4 weeks until I was 24 weeks, every 2 weeks from 24-32 weeks, and every week after that (with peri visits thrown in for extra monitoring).

  • I was going every 4wks, I havent had any complications so I dont know if that has anything to do with it. At 28wks I started every 2 wks.

You can always switch, I have seen people on here switch after 30wks.

  • For me (uncomplicated di-di pregnancy) it didn't change quite that early; I had appts at 20w, 22.5w (had to do a followup anatomy scan for measurements they couldn't get at 20w), 26w, 28w, 30w, and then weekly after that.

  • Mine weren't 2 weeks apart until around 30 wks, then 32 wks, tomorrow @ 34 weeks, then weekly there after.
  • When I hit 20, I had appts at: 20, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, then twice weekly up to delivery at 38.6

You haven't met the doctor yet?  I understand the reasoning for rotating you through the staff, that way you meet everyone who could potentially deliver you.  But still.  I would also be concerned that they aren't going over the protocol with you.  When we learned about our twins at 5.4, they immediately sat us down and went over everything, the protocol, the potential risks and complications I could be facing, what risks and complications the babies could be facing.  Then they introduced us to the others in the practice that same day.

It is not too late to change doctors.  What part of Upstate are you in?

  • Thanks for the advice everyone!

I live in Kingston, NY. There seems to be a shortage of OBs in the area, so the ones that are here seem to be overloaded and preoccupied.  At this point, I would drive wherever just to see someone who didn't seem like they forgot I was having twins periodically throughout each appt. KWIM??  The midwife at the the last appt. must have said at least three times, "Oh, that's right, you're having twins!"  And the appt. only lasted 20 minutes!

Ditto about switching Drs. you need to feel comfortable.

I think I have the same schedule as mrscalkins. I started going every 2 weeks at 22 weeks (with growth scans every 4 weeks). I'm not sure if/when I'll transition to more often though.

That would be completely frustrating.  As busy as my OB's office is, I'm on a first name basis with pretty much everyone there.  They are very focused on the personal treatment.  I had to laugh, when I went to the one of my childbirth classes, the woman teaching it knew who I was, my due date, and the sex of my babies, but I didn't recognize her.  Turns out she was also a nurse at my OB's office.  Bummer that you aren't anywhere near me, I would refer you there!
  • I went at 17w, I'll go at 20, 23, 26, 28, 30, etc.  Not sure when weekly will start, but I think that's pretty much the schedule until I'm 30w.
