Insurance that covers IUI and IVF

Does your insurance cover IUI and IVF?  If so what kind do you have?  I wish my insurance had better coverage when it came to IF and pregnancy coverage in general.

Re: Insurance that covers IUI and IVF

  • No, unfortunately our insurance covers no treatments. We do have diagnostic coverage. Although, at our last appointment, my NP said that we do have fairly good coverage overall. She said we'd never get an IUI or IVF covered, but the way she worded it, it seems that monitoring and (some) meds may be covered.

I have fantastic coverage. ?We're with Harvard Pilgrim, and they've covered all of our IUI expenses (we just have to do $10 copays) and my meds ($5 copays). ?If IUI #3 is a BFN, we're moving to IVF in the fall, and I anticipate the coverage to continue to be excellent.

    Good luck!?

You are lucky because Massachusetts mandates coverage.  I have BCBS of Mass. and have all my treatments and meds covered as well.  This was amazing luck since H and I live in PA and he was hired long before we started TTC by a company in Mass.

Absolutely. ?Living here was just a happy coincidence.
  • Nope.  Nada.  Zip.  Supposedly diagnostic, but once they diagnose you as infertile, they don't cover more tests (not saying much since it's easy to diagnose someone as infertile without explaining why.)

Supposedly they cover meds, but they have an exclusion that says they won't cover all crazy injectibles if used in conjunction with a "procedure" (IUI or IVF) So evidentally they want people stimming 20 follicles and then doing TI?  Insane.

They also cover GIFT, but we can't find any REs that do it anymore since it's outdated.

I just blogged about my stupid insurance coverage if you want to read more.

  • yup, both.  i have bc/bs of NJ - but we have mandated IF coverage if the employer has more than 50 people insured.

My old insurance covered absolutely nothing.  My new coverage is amazing.  We are covered for 100% of any IF treatments, including Rx, IUI and IVF. I was THRILLED when I saw our new policy!
  • I'm on DH's insurance: Health Mate Coast to Coast which is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI plan.  All tx's are covered 80% as is mandated by state law.  We are very lucky.

  • I have Blue Cross Blue Sheild and they are covering it.  I know not all policies will but we got on the policy that did before we started everything.  What a headache all this insurance stuff is!!!!
  • Nope! Our insurance covers meds, testing and nine cycles of IUI (and I just found out that they count a TI cycle off of those nine) but no IVF. We are actually thinking of switching in January from MVP to the Empire plan. My friend works for them and she told me that they offer a $50,000 lifetime infertility benefit, so that would help cover IVF. But I feel a little like we are getting ahead of ourselves since we are just starting out first IUI cycle.

  • My health insurance is Health Plan of Nevada and they cover 6 IUI's, DH has Aetna through Bank of America and they cover IVF and all fertility drugs. So between the 2 we have wonderful coverage. We are not in a mandated state, but its just the specific plan.

I am employed for a company with more than 5,000 employees globally

    COVERAGE
    Infertility @ 100% less $20 specialist copay
    Lifetime Max of $15,000
charges are only applied to this dollar limit for IUI & IVF

Aside: As if $15k would pay for any more than a few IUIs and maybe one hail mary IVF. Thus far, our plan is to do IVF until we're blue-in-the-face. We have great sperm to work with.... so in theory..... we shouldn't need IVF and it's just a matter of time.

    In theory....

yup, both.  i have bc/bs of NJ - but we have mandated IF coverage if the employer has more than 50 people insured.

Unfortunately in NJ, there's a loophole in the mandate that says if the employer is self insured, like EVERY hospital in the state, then you don't have to cover it. So, there isn't a nurse in the state that has fertility coverage. Thanks NJ bastards.

My insurance covers diagnostics. That's it. DH covers IF with a raging deductible of $5k. That said, $5k is still less than $15K and I'm probably going to go on his insurance at the next open enrollment (november).

Keep in  mind, it's not the INSURANCE COMPANY that chooses to cover  IF or not. It's the employer. One person can have amazing IF benefits through BCBS (for example) and another can have none... it all depends on what the employer (in non mandated states) wants to cover. So the gripe isn't with the insurer, it's with the employer.

  • I hate our insurance co with a PASSION. We live in Mass but my hubbys insurance is out of Ohio-so it goes by Ohios laws. If I was on state insurance (like welfare)it would be covered. Our insurance company is Atena.

That's who we have (Ben works for them), and their employee plan SUCKS.  There's no treatment coverage at all.

  • Hope it's OK that I post here, I just wanted to mention (since it doesn't seem like anyone else has) that insurance coverage for IF is determined by your employer, not the insurance company. So if I have Aetna through employer X and you have Aetna through employer Y, you may have full IF coverage and I may have none.

    GL!

  • Ours does to a max lifetime cap. We have BCBS of PA.

It's not a matter of what insurance coverage you have, it's what your company chooses to include in their plan.

    GL!

I mentioned that about 3-4 posts up and in a similar thread two days ago.

And the mandated coverage means nothing. I'm in a mandated state, and the loopholes allow my employer to pay for nothing.

  • we live in IL... with a state mandate for IF coverage (employers can get out of it, but most have to offer coverage).     we feel very, very, very lucky.

I'm in NJ and we have state-mandated IF coverage too.

I'm with Blue Cross Blue Shield, and they covered 100% of IUI with $10 copay for each visit and meds (so it cost us about $250), but only 80% for IVF and meds (so it cost us about $5000).
