Craigslist is seriously p-ing me off

We've been hoping to get a Step 2 or Little Tikes swing set for our toddler for a while now, but don't want to shell out $600 for it. So we've been checking craigslist like lunatics for one. This is the second time in the last few weeks that someone has promised to hold one for us and then sold it. I realize these are people just trying to make a quick sale and not stores, but if someone contacts you and tells you they'll be there tomorrow with the $ to pick it up and you agree then shouldn't you actually do that?! Both times the sellers have stopped responding to emails and then eventually just sent quick emails saying that the items had been sold. So frustrating.

  • i have only run into that once with a little tykes playhouse.  seriously that stuff is big selling stuff!   one said if you can be here in 30 minutes it's yours, and they were actually taking bids-like can you go higher than this price etc.   needless to say i was not going to play that game.  you'll find someone honest soon-just keep looking!

That sounds very frustrating - it is not like you are asking them to hold it for a week so you can see it.

I have been shopping Kijiji (Canadian version of Craigslist) for a jogging stroller.  Although I am not looking for a specific brand I have several features that I want it to have and I also don't want it to be too old.  I will email people to ask them about the specific features and the age of the stroller and don't hear back from them at all.  I understand people not responding if the item sells (rude - but understandable) but sometimes I see the same thing being re-posted over and over without ever getting a response.

  • Ugh. Sorry! That would make me really mad too!
  • Craigslist can be difficult, for both buyers and sellers. You never know what kind of people you are going to deal with.
  • Yeah, I think thats ridiculous, we just sold a washer/dryer on craigslist and actually held it for the lady for a week, despite being contacted by two other people.  Its what I would want someone to do for me you know? Sorry those sellers arent treating you well! Hope you find one soon!

  • That is so frustrating!  I have always been willing to hold things for a couple of days (within reason) for people.  If I get other inquiries about it I tell them that someone else has already contacted me first, but if that falls through I will get back to them.  I think that is the proper thing to do.  Luckly I haven't many problems other than one time someone told me they were going to hold it for me for two days (I couldn't get there sooner because I work two jobs) and the day before I was supposed to go get it they called me back and said that they had already sold it.  I really upset for a while but ended up finding a better crib that we love!  Hope you're able to find some decent people to deal with soon and can get what you're looking for!

This.  I know it can be frustrating as a buyer, but as a frequent seller on Craigslist, I can't tell you how many times I've held stuff for people that we're coming 'first thing in the morning with the cash' that suddenly drop off the face of the planet.  As a result, I have a firm 'no hold, first come, first serve' policy.  It stinks, but like I said, I've learned the hard way.  As sellers, they should have been upfront if they didn't intent to hold the product, though.
