WDYT: Your family blog and privacy

Hi gals,

Just wondering if you hae opinions on this and what they are.

We have a family blog.  We have relatives overseas.  We have family throughout the country.  So we have blog (which will double as a baby book) that has photos and information about what we've been up to.  Pretty basic.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on privacy.  Under certain search terms, our blog now comes up on a google search.  I'm okay with friends, family and friends of family (facebook) etc. etc. looking at our blog.  But I'm not so sure about total strangers.

Am I being paranoid to think that people would really care to look at our blog if it came up on a search?  Our blog name does have our last name.  And I'm sure you could figure out what state/city we live in.  But there's no specific information as to where we live etc.

Thoughts please.

Re: WDYT: Your family blog and privacy

  • There was just a post on here a while ago about someone overseas using a facebook photo as an ad. I think it was in the news.

Anyway, I had a similar issue a few weeks ago. I actually locked my blog until I got it sorted.

Depending on what kind of blog you have though, you can go and lock it from search engines, or make it viewable to those who have a password.

Personally, I don't post a lot of pics (except here) but that's just because I'm really lazy, and it takes too much time. But for personal posts, I just lock them. You can do this with WP, but I'm not sure about Blogger. I also don't use a last name and rarely mention a city of residence, nor do I mention where we work. I use weebly for a family website (which also has a blog feature), but I'm mostly worried about people finding out things via the more popular mediums.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

  • We are kicking around the idea of making our blog protected or private but haven't done anything yet. We don't have our last name on the site and don't talk about where we live or work or even our church name or other location specific stuff on it... It just says we live in a Seattle suburb. You can probably figure out we live on the eastside but not much else from there...

Where I do have an issue is with a certain commenter (MIL) who does things that we've asked  her not to. I'm trying to figure out what to do about her and really think that we just might turn off commenting or lock it all down for now.

  • If you have a Blogger you can change the settings so it doesn't show up in Google searches or in the Blogger directory.

    1. Go to your dashboard

    2. Click on "settings" under your blog name

    3. Under "Basics", there is an option to "Add blog to our listings?" and "Let search engines find your blog?" - make sure you select NO from the drop down menu next to that.

    4. Save

I make sure our location is pretty vague and never use our last name on the blog or mention where DH works.

You can also moderate comments so if someone posts a comment with your last name or other personal info you don't want out on your blog you can read it and choose not to publish it first.

    HTH!
