Expensive Diaper Bags question

So, it seems like last week or the one before people were discussing Petunia Pickle Bottoms and other expensive diaper bags and it made me want to ask a question.

I know that expensive is relative, but PPB's are around $170 or something and that's expensive to me.

So anyway, my question is, if you bought one, why did you decide to (I'm not judging, just curious).  and if you did, do you think it was worth the money as far as quality and what-not?

Re: Expensive Diaper Bags question

  • DH bought me a Coach diaper bag when we first started TTC. Needless to say it has been sitting in a box in my closet since April of 2007.  I haven't looked at it in a while.  If it is like my other Coach bags, then it is made well. As far as if it is worth the money, I would probably have to say you can get just as nice of bags for a lot less. DH just indulges me when it comes to Coach.

I understand it and I don't understand it.  It's a functional accessory that I'm going to carry for a long while (at least until LB's potty trained).

I have no problem with paying over $200 for a purse (although my faves are LLBean and Land's End tote bags... and a Kenneth Cole carryall Embarrassed), so paying $170 for a huge bag that will be a part of me for the better part of 2 years, I don't think that's a huge deal...

But I'm probably going to get a Land's End tote to use as a diaper bag...

  • Even though I don't have a Coach or any other purse or bag like that I have always wanted them and completely understand getting one.  I figure if you have the $$$ for it then go for it.  and I have to admit I think PPB's are precious and kind of want one  :)   So that's what brought up the ? b/c I'm trying to convince myself that it might be worth it to splurge on one!

  • I love my Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag. It totally depends on what you like and what you are looking for. I honestly dont own a diaper bag under 85 bucks, except the free one I got. i have  juicy couture one and its Big and bulky and doesnt fit hardly anything in there. It weighs a bunch and doesnt have a nice carrying strap. It was over 300, but I got it as a gift. So not worth it to me! I have a Jujubee bag and I love it, Its smaller and fits what I need now for a toddler and the patterns are nice and washable. Changing stuff and two bottles easily accessibleThis one is of almost equal quality to PPB and its about 80 or a hundred I think. But I love my PPB best , I paid about 160 for it and I love it, its a back pack and a sling. I love the fabric. So spacious with tons of pockets for bottles, etc. Changing stuff and two bottles easily accessible. i love it and i also have a pottery barn one thats a sling I got for DH for the shower. It has our last name engraved on it and its got room for what you need. This one was about 80ish too.So like i said it depends. It took me a while after baby to realize what I really needed. I bought the Juicy one before DS came and its the most pointless one. The rest I had a better clue what I was looking for. Also make sure it will fit with your stroller. This was a problem for me. Mkae sure it fits under or can be hung on the handles. YOu DO NOT want to be carrying that heavy thing around shopping! GL Look into JuJuBee though best for the price of "high end" diaper bag !

  • Oh also, you wont use a purse anymore, besides a lil change thing for cash and ids. So spend what you would if you wanted a new purse. JMI

    oooh, good point, thanks!

  • It's a glorified purse,a nd some women can justify spending a lot on purses and some can't.  Same goes for sunglasses, shoes, etc.  I have always splurged on my bags.  It's my one weakness.  Sunglasses on the other hand, I refuse to spend more than $10.  To each their own.
  • I got a PPB bag from the Cake collection, which are actually more in the $300 range.  I would spend that much on a purse and I figure this will basically be my purse.

  • My thinking is I spend $$$ on handbags, so what's the difference? I also think that if I'm going to be carrying a baby around who will spit up on me and I will generally not feel as good as I have in the past (until I lose the weight again) about myself then damn it. I want a hot bag.

PPB is not my idea of a hot bag, but I know a lot of girls really like them. Everyone has their preference.

I have a Storksak Gigi in chocolate from my first son and I hated it. It's a great quality made bag. I just thought it was way too big. I would use it when I would occasionally take my son to my friend's house to share a sitter. Now it sits in it's dust bag at the top of his closet.

Now my friend refused to spend $$$ on a quality diaper bag. She uses a couple cheap bags from BRU (not saying they are all cheap) and they are such pitas. They collapse, the pockets are flimsy and don't hold items properly and it's hard to stay organized. Now my friend is not very organized herself. I can't imagine not being organized with a child. It would drive me insane.

  • I just recently had the same dilemma about whether I should spend a lot of money on a diaper bag. I have never spent a ton of money on purses, and struggled w/spending over $100 on a diaper bag. However, I decided that this needed to last me for a while, and that it was probably going to replace my purse. Plus, I figure that I am going to be pregnant for 9 months and probably have to go through a painful labor, so I may as well allow myself some type of luxury! I ended up ordering a Jujube bag this past weekend, and am really excited about getting it in this week. I did lots of research and found that these bags came highly recommended, and weren't WAY over my price point. I would definitely recommend researching so you can decide what type of bag is best for you though. You want to make sure you get something you like.

  • I have a Kate Spade and what a waste. I hardly used it.  I'd much rather invest in a handbag instead of a diaper bag.  Now that DD is 15 months old it's way too big and not needed.  So to spend that much on a diapar bag I carried for not even a year was a waste.  There are cute, cheap diaper bags out there.
  • I asked for  a PPB for my birthday & my husband got it for me. I don't know that I would've just bought it for myself. But I absolutely LOVE it. It's huge. I can fit a ton of stuff in it. It's a backpack which can be convenient at times. It's really cute so I feel good toting it around. Purses are one of the only things I splurge on & I figured this would basically be like a purse. I use it all the time, practically every day so I definitely say it was worth it.
  • I don't have a problem with expensive baby stuff (or expensive stuff in general) if people have that money to spend.  I don't like PPB though because I think they are ugly.
  • I'm kind of a bag snob, I guess, and I want something that looks like a purse, not a DB. I'm either going to get a StorkSak, a Kate Spade or an oversized Tory Burch and just make it work as a daiper bag. I figure I will be using it everyday; its worth the expense to carry something I feel good about.

This is the reason I spent more on a diaper bag. I usually spend anywhere from 50 - 300 on a purse at a time and I knew if I was going to be turning them in for a diaper bag it had to be comperable.

  • Mine was a (much appreciated) gift; I have the PPB Boxy Backpack.  I do like it a lot.  I probably would have purchased a Storksak had I bought it myself, just because of the way they look.  The PPB is great in that it can be used as a backpack, a shoulder bag, or a messenger.  I use it mostly as a shoulder bag.  I took out the changing pad, because I think it took up too much room, but there are a lot of good features to it.  The quality is great; I've used mine for 18 months, and it still looks great (I have a brocade one, not a silk one.)  I am on the hunt for something larger now that I will have two, and I will probably end up paying in the $100-$200 range.
  • I'm with the OP...I don't believe in spending 200+ for a diaper bag just because it's cute when that money could be better spent on things we actually NEED for LO...or even starting a college fund for her.  I paid 68$+shipping for a Lexie Tote that I got on mamabargains (regularly close to 200$).  I like cute expensive things too...who doesn't?  That doesn't mean I'm not going to try to be smart with my money.  I've never been a several hundred dollar purse girl any way.  I change my mind too often to pay that much for a bag I'm going to get bored of in a few months any way.
  • Well, I should preface this with the fact that we are getting over half of what we'll need for the baby from my sister- so money isn't an issue here and I feel okay about a splurge.

I chose a Storksak Emily.  The leather strap is substantial and nice looking and will patina well, the design is right on and the organization really appeals to me. These qualities do not come together in lesser expensive bags.  I did get my bag on sale, though.

A tote wouldn't work for me, it would be missing the organization I need.  I don't like the PPB patterns or fabric patterns often seen on the Etsy bags.  I'm not a backpack girl and that is unlikely to change.  That's all.   Just my taste.  I completely understand it when people gravitate toward any or all of those things, because it is their taste!

I'm happy with my little (to me) splurge, for me!
